Plume Agates
« on: November 11, 2009, 03:58:47 AM »
Since no one else jumped on this, here goes.  Plume Agates come from all over and are distinguished from other agates by, you guessed it, plumes.  I just got my new issue of Rock and Gem yesterday and the whole thing is dedicated to agates, what great timing.  I remember someone else mentioning this issue at least a week ago, so i guess i got mine late.  I always wonder how many people pass my mags around the post office before i get to look at them.  My log home magazines were always very worn when they finally got to me.  The rock ones seem to do better, guess postmen and women are not as interested in rocks.  And since my expensive rock mags are also shrink wrapped, i don't have to worry about the postal people, just their machines that occasionally eat a magazine.  Anyways, plume agates.  I have recently read that there are at least 15 different types of agate inclusions and plume is just one.  There are also moss, tube, dendritic, sagenitic, flame, etc.  I am guessing that most plumes are jasper but there may also be some that are pyrite and other materials.  So here's some pics.  Please feel free to add pics and text and any other interesting and useful info.  Also feel free to correct any mistakes i may have made.  As for the names of the stones i am posting, these came from the dealers that sold them to me and may or may not be quite accurate.  So please join in, we love pictures and info.

Here's some more pics.  This time we have a confused Agate that has a mix of plumes and moss.  You see, its not always easy to classify every stone we find.  Check out the blue area, that is rather unusual considering the predominance of the yellow/red and green coloring.

Thanks for the pics, Mark. It's nice to have something to visualize when reading about so
e of the more obscure stuff.  You've got some beautiful pieces there.

Mark, great agates and plumes.  Expecially love the last one, the Prue heart.  I guess it's the contrasts that catch my eye. That's quite a collection. Also love the first one you posted with the reds, greens and blue....again it's the contrast.  What's most amazing is that no two are alike!

I'm sure there are a lot of cool pics of Plume Agate out there.  Please add on, one and all.  My pics are just a dent in the Plume Agates of the world.

Your plume agate is so cool. Mark, thanks for starting this thread.
This a black plume I am fussing over how to cab. It comes from the southwest Texas area.

OK. Some Plume to gander at.
Some I have shown in the past here on the forum so it's more for the benefit of the newer folks.
Philip-

The Leathers Ranch Plume is an extinct species of Plume. It has clear amethyst colored chalcedony with white plumes.

The Regency Rose is just another name for a certain type of Graveyard Point plume. It's still available and highly prized by cabbers for the multi-colored plumes of green, white, pink, yellow, gray and shiny pyrite.

Stinking Water Plume is found in Oregon and one of my favorites. It has clear agate with snow white plumes. The plumes can sometimes be needle like.

The Green Leathers Ranch is the other flavor of this plume, it also comes in burgundy and red.

Nice plume Dan. I like the Texas stuff since I live here and collect it. My favorite collecting ranch is closed now. The others are also nice. The Canadian river agate is getting hard to come by even in Texas.

Dang Dan, that is a fine collection of plume you got there yourself Mister:)
They are all breath taking but my favorite is that Hampton Butte, looks like the sun coming up over the Smokey mountains on a foggy morning in the fall when the leaves are turning.
Thank you Dan for showing these.
