Killer Jewelry Contest - January 2014
« on: January 01, 2014, 12:42:15 PM »
Rules for this contest will be similar to the Killer Cab Contest. One entry per person, and your entry must be made during the contest period. You can enter anything that has stones as a primary decorative element and is meant for being carried on your person. No Tiffany-style lamp shades, polished display pieces, windchimes etc. Pretty much everything else is fair game. Metalwork, beading, wire wraps, earplugs, bolo ties, belt buckles, even knives.

You must show photos of your piece before and after assembly. You do NOT have to have made every element of your creation, but you should state which pieces, if any, you made and which pieces you bought. If you made everything from scratch I am sure everyone would want to know that when casting their vote!

You can detail as much of the creation process as you like. I would love for these contests to also serve as sort of mini-tutorials.    But no pressure! Before and after pics are all that is required!

Well, I guess I'll start this one off one  the 1st day of 2014............. dancer27 ............Finished the piece today......

The stone rough was a gift from our Dear Scarlet-O-Sara about a year or so ago.  Finally polished it out this autumn.  I don't know what it is so if anyone has some insight into that I would appreciate a name.

Here's the stone...........

To get the stone height I wanted for the 3/16" bezel tape, I needed to build a two strand step bezel on the 22g backing sheet.............

Since the stone is translucent, the backing is cut out to allow light through............

For the outside accent I created another step to raise the gallery bezel.........

Once the gallery was fitted I curled the spires to touch the edge of the bezel backing................

The dry fit photo #1 -  top view.............

The dry fit photo #2 - side view aligning the spires to the edge of the backing rather than the top.............

Finished piece - Photo #1

Outside photo showing translucency...........

Happy New Year everyone and keep 'em coming...................... yes16

Steve, I'm not 100% on this one, but it sure looks like it could be ocean jasper to me.  I know Sarah loved OJ, so maybe ....   dunno28

Beautiful, pendant, BTW!

I was under the impression that Jaspers were opaque.  This kinda polished like an Agateish rather than a Jasper...........but then again I'm not really versed in types of rock......................... dunno28

I have some OJ slabs that have translucent areas as well as druzy vugs.  Maybe I can get a picture to post later today after I get home from work.

Agates do cross over into Jasper territory at times, OJ is one of those. I'm attaching a photo of one of my OJ cabs. I know it is in fact OJ for sure.

Steve,

Here are pictures of 3 different OJ slabs the first two pics are the same slab, one taken up by the light to show the translucency; the other two have those little orbs all crammed together like your stone.

It's nice to see some entries again for the jewelry contest.  Amanda your piece is a lovely departure from what we expect from you.  You are always surprising us with what you come up with.   Steve I'm always delighted to see your work.  We got ourselves and excellent start.
