I love these fish you are carving now.  Beautiful.  Did you finish the rhodonite one?

Absolutely!

Snakeadelic -- what state are you in?

Camilla,

You did a fabulous job on that stone for your mom!  Good for you for not giving up.  Anything worthwhile takes practice and now every single stone you cut will get easier and easier until you can out-cut your dad!  Your mom will love her gift, especially because you took the time to make it for her!   yippie24

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

I would put them either in Rough on the Bench or in the Shop and Swap category (even though you are giving them away).  There's no specific category for giving rocks away, so pick whichever you like.

I truly hope you get some relief from all of your medical problems and ignorant neighbors.  Sending up prayers for your healing.  Please do keep in touch and let us know how you're getting on.

Look for dental diamond drill bits (just do a search).  They come in really tiny sizes.

I can do a perfect circle on my faceting machine with the quill set to 90 degrees and in free wheel mode (dop is not locked).  I'm guessing you could do the same thing with some type of jig and a flat lap as long as you could adjust the device vertically up or down.  On the faceting machine it works a treat.

finegemdesigns - it did and thank you!   dancer27

Thank you, Don!   hugs23

By all means, have your discussion.  That is the whole purpose of this forum.  Just do it civilly.

Zurn - you're most welcome.  I have been buying rough from them for years and have never been disappointed.  As a matter of fact, I have some slabs I bought from them years ago that are in the "too pretty to cut drawer".  dancer27

Polishedball - I use CeOx on leather or I'll use diamond on a Tech-10.  I personally don't like felt because it generates too much heat for my liking.  I only will drag out felt when I'm having trouble polishing with all my usual suspects.  That's just me -- your mileage may vary.

First of all, even Rob Kulakofsky, who owns ColorWright (Great Rough, Great Slabs, etc.) says in his description of of Absolute Black that it is not true jade:

"Absolute Black "Jade" Rough
Absolute Black "Jade" is gem grade ferro-hornblende and not a true jade. It is absolutely black, with no green undertones, just like the Edwards black jade mined long ago in Wyoming. Absolute Black "Jade" is denser and has a higher refractive index than true jade. Absolute Black "Jade" quickly takes a higher polish than can be obtained with true jades. Unlike black onyx, which is dyed chalcedony, Absolute Black "Jade" is completely natural. Excellent material for inlay, cabochons and beads. Mohs hardness 6.5."

Second, play nice.  Most of the folks on this board are upstanding people who are truly interested in knowing exactly what the material they have is.  Slandering members will not be tolerated.  Nobody on this board that I know of wants to sell material as something it isn't, so if there is an offer of testing to find out what it is, take it as exactly that -- an offer.

'Nuff said.

Vince and I were hoping it was you that had got it.  Went for starting bid price and at $195 that was really cheap.  Where are you located?  Sometimes you can find equipment for reasonable prices on Craig's List in your area.  Also check out estate sales, etc. in the newspaper.  You never know what you'll find.

Under $1,000 will definitely be difficult if you buy new.  Any grinding machine or saw by itself is going to be near that or more new.  If you haven't already done so, join a rock club in your area.  Sometimes members have equipment for sale, too.  Vince and I have saws in different sizes that we picked up from Ebay (14" drop saw) that we had to go pick up in Payson for around $300, an 10" ancient saw from our club for $50 (no motor), a 6" from a garage sale for $100, and I finally bought a 10" rebuilt Highland Park that I bought for Vince this year that was around $1,000 with shipping.  (Vince loves saws).  Of course, we didn't get them all at once.  We've been collecting them for 6 years now.

Good luck!

Beautiful stones.  I'm having a hard time deciding whether I like the Bruneau or the Biggs better.   dunno28
