Shop and Swap / Looking for amethyst rough
« on: December 13, 2015, 02:48:37 PM »
I am looking for some amethyst rough for a 50 x 20 mm cab. It does not have to be faceting grade material, but something with decent color, and clarity is good. If anyone has some rough or a slab that they can part with it would be appreciated. Below is a link to an example of the style of bracelet it is for. The stone in this one is a good example of the color and clarity that is acceptable.
Any leads or help is appreciated.
Justin

When a friend sent me a bracelet missing a carving, and asked me to cut a cab to fit it I thought are you kidding me?  I warmed up to the idea and took a thin slab of malachite that I had slabbed from a broken carving. I roughed it out on a trim saw and shaped it down  on a 100 grit wheel. As I got closer to the form I used carbon paper to make a stencil of the exact shape and traced it. From here I quit using the cabbing machine and filed the edges to fit with a diamond file. This part took me a looong time. I held the cab underwater in a tupperware to eliminate any dust. No copper for me. Once it fit the setting I domed it a bit and polished the top.  I was so relieved when it was done. I was fearful of the arm breaking off while I was holding it. Now I can relax!

Identification Inquiries / Need an ID on Turquoise
« on: October 21, 2015, 09:18:24 PM »
I picked up an old ring with a cracked stone at the flea market. I took the stone out and cut this piece of turquoise to fit it. When I showed it to my wife it fit on her finger. Guess where it is now? I would like to know what kind of turquoise this is. The rough had little matrix, a pebbly greenish texture to it, and it cabbed beautifully. A friend of mine gave it to me after winning a lot at an auction (not e-bay).
Does anyone have any idea what type it is?
Thanks
Justin

Shop and Swap / Variety of scenic Polka Dot for sale
« on: September 28, 2015, 08:44:45 PM »
I've got a few lots and several individual pieces of Polka Dot Agate  listed  on e-bay. There is a good assortment with lots of variety. Good old stock material. I am told it has been sitting in the sun for 20 years so any color is stable. Lots of good scenic pieces. Most of the listings are BIN, and price is negotiable.

Identification Inquiries / Need help with brecciated stone id
« on: August 15, 2015, 04:27:07 PM »
Need some help with this agate id. I got it from the goodie pile at Richardson's Ranch so it could be from anywhere. It looks like an agate with brecciation. The color of the jasper portion and the purple hue to the agate remind me of Youngite, but the limited amount of Youngite that I have seen has tighter, smaller areas of agate in-between the jasper.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Shop and Swap / Flat Rate Boxes of Polka Dot
« on: August 15, 2015, 02:51:15 PM »
I just listed a few medium flat rate boxes of some old stock polka dot agate. The price is about $3 a pound before shipping. One box is pieces that are good for a 12 inch saw. The other has smaller pieces that could either be slabbed or cut in a trim saw depending on your preference.
Thanks for looking!

This is a batch of Ocean Jasper Cabs I just finished. With the the exception of one piece these were all cut from rough chunks, not slabs. The bottom left rough was too thin so I flattened the bottom on a lap and then made a doublet with basenite to give it some mass.
Thanks for lookin'

Finally got done with moving, and settled in WA. Got a work bench set up, and finished a few cabs for the first time in months. I tend to binge on a certain type of material for a while, and right now it's Ocean Jasper. I love the variety of color and pattern within the same type of stone.
Thanks for looking!

Our Place / Polka Dot Agate Volcano Lanscape
« on: May 09, 2015, 12:13:45 AM »
This is a little sliver of Polka Dot Agate that I face polished. It sits too perfectly to be cut down into cabochons. It wants to be on a display shelf somewhere.

Identification Inquiries / Need help with Opal ID
« on: May 04, 2015, 11:01:10 PM »
A friend of mine asked me if I knew what this stone was. I told him at a guess I thought it was lightning ridge black opal, but that I would post it here to check. Any help is appreciated.

Rock Hounding Trips, Tips, and Pics / Last trip to the beach
« on: March 16, 2015, 05:11:24 PM »
I've been lucky enough to get an awesome job in Olympia and I am moving to Washington next month! While I have been assured that there are many new rock hounding opportunities for me up there I have to give up the ones I have come to know in Humboldt County.

So, I made a trip today out to one of my favorite beaches. This one has special significance because it is where I my rockhounding career started, and it is also where I scattered my Mother's ashes.

The day was great. I did not get many rocks, but I got to enjoy it one last time, and I scrambled up the peak at the north end (location hint!) to snap some good pictures.

The rocks that I did get were some nice beach agates, as well as a piece of what looks like brecciated wood. The other really cool thing that I go to see were baby mussels (I think growing on the rocks).
