Story on Chinese Jadeite carving
« on: June 15, 2014, 10:53:44 AM »
GIA has a great article and video on a company that does high-end jadeite carving in a sculptural style.  The article and especially the video (which are different) show how the colors and textures of the rough are incorporated into the design.  The video also shows a huge slab (~6x10 feet) carving they are planning.

The story implies the actual role of "master carvers" is to supply the design and final details, and that juniors and apprentices do most of the actual roughing and polishing.  They do not elaborate on that, though.

There are some spectacular pieces shown, and the video mentions many of the larger ones can go for millions of yuan.  (1000 yuan currently = ~$160US.)  The top artists are famous there and can make ~1,000,000 yuan /yr, or about $160,000US, an enormous sum in China.
