Pictures in Stone "what do you see?"
« on: May 17, 2020, 09:24:46 AM »

After Vince posted his old Mex rough pic I thought this might make a great sticky thread where everyone can post unusual pictures they find in slabs and rough.  There are so many possibilities from the classic Picture Jaspers to great fortification patterns in the form of images or even some of the classic Thunder Egg images.  Lets get them all in one place for us all to enjoy.

I thought I would start it off with an Indonesian Palm Wood that the rough was picked up at Tyson Wells during Quartzsite for a buck a pound.  Had a black rind on one side but other than that just looked like tan wood.  I got 2 great slabs and some other good ones.  First is a pic that looks like the Ceratosaurus and the 2nd is one that looks like a morae eel of scary worm?  slabs are about 4" across

Really good volcano, also a hurricane, oddly vertical next to the volcano.

The first picture jasper, a hilly shrub covered landscape with a dinosaur walking uphill. Will have to think about the other two.

Great idea for a thread, irockhound!  I'll sticky it so it's easy to find.   :occasion14:

Nice jasper pics.  I love that blue sky in the 2nd pic.  Which jasper is that looks like more translucence than the usual Jasper.

The second jasper has me stumped, too. Only one I can think of with such a wide range of colors is Vistaite, but I don't think I've ever seen that shade of blue in anything we have.

I cut this one last week.  It was a Montana that had the rind on the left so I had to cut carefully to remove rind cracks while maintaining the inclusions that form close to the rind.  I had a tough decision on which side to cut since one side had a Dendrite close to the surface and felt it would grind away but the other side I would lose too many of the edge dendrites.  I chose the one that might lose the dendrite close to the surface.  Once I started grinding and got down to the dome curvature the picture emerged.  I then sweated thru the grits hoping that I wouldn't lose this Amazing picture.  When on it's side you can see either a Moth Butterfly or dragonfly flying over a field of flowers.  If the cab is turned more on the edge the 2 flowers towards the tip actually have a stem and a blossom on each.  The wings look like a dragonfly but the body is too fat and looks more like a moth to me.  Still a collection keeper cab for me.
