Oops...my eyes are bigger than my trim saws!
« on: January 14, 2018, 05:17:56 PM »

Here's a slab of Hampton Butte Petrified Palm that I just couldn't pass up at the local (Sierra Vista) show in September. Not for $20.

Now trying to lay out some cabs. Doesn't fit on any of my saws. Won't even get near the 6" blade on the Loretone combo machine or my 10" Raytech.  About my only hope is to remove the vise on the Ameritool 5" trim saw and make a cut down the left side of the slab then flip the slab over, rotate it and cut the rest of the corner off.  Then repeat, and repeat, and repeat...

I sympathize - have had the same problem. Cheap plastic cutting board cut into strips and laid on the saw table will give you a solid surface to get the slab above the sidewalls of the saw table. Anything thick enough will work, but the plastic will let the slab slide fairly easily.

Sounds like a good reason to buy a bigger saw .

$67.99 buys you a 7 inch tile saw at Harbor Freight.  I found mine would take an 8 inch blade and I can trim pieces up to about 3 inches thick.  I stand on the backside of the saw when cutting thick stuff so that I am out of the water spray.....

I posted a thread about making a small saw have a big footprint. I cut out a piece of Plexiglas (wood would work) on the saw table. The Plexiglas must fit the saw tables top and be just taller than the edges. With a slot cut for the blade this allows you room to slide your slab fully into the blade. You may also have to remove the water shield over the blade. Yep, then it gets messy but you only do this for a couple slices to trim down the big slab and put the shield back on. Wear eye protection....  I will see if I can find the thread later.

This slab looks a lot like Gary green jasper to me, I could be wrong and it wouldn't be the first time either.
I have a bit of Hampton butte and I don't recall seeing any blue coloring, perhaps it is just the photo or my lying eyes. :dontknow:

My limited experience is that they are the same - just different names.

Hampton butte material is a green petrified wood located in central Oregon,Gary green is a jasper found near Mcdermitt Nevada. The 2 locations are separated by a couple of hundred miles, here is a picture of the wood they are very similar in coloring.     :book1:
