Nice local find
« on: April 27, 2018, 07:01:10 PM »

I stopped by a public access area west of where I live, on the margin of the Willamette Valley the other day and found some nice petrified wood. Some of it is really nice.
Probably have to go back and snoop around a bit more.
The pics are of one piece I grabbed. Nice look to it and a very nice solid red jasper interior. The stuff takes a great polish.
I could not bring myself to put it in the saw and stopped with just one small window. Weighs 15.5 oz.
The red area on the side has some nice drusy. The camera did not catch it.
Great fun!  :toothy10:
I am keeping this one as it speaks to me and has a great feel to the touch.

I like how petrified wood can be anywhere out here.I one leaned my rifle on a small "dead" tree in a clear cut and it made a ringing sound. A long narrow petrified log mimicking  the dead wood in the clear cut. Very nice piece.Any agates in that area?

Beautiful find!  I agree - go back and find at least another piece you can slab up and cut.  It looks like it would make some gorgeous cabs!

I'm with you Stonemon,  I wouldn't cut that one either.  At most I might try polishing a surface but would have to think long and hard about it.

I have some other pieces I grabbed while I was there. One of them may wind up in the Frantom 24 today...
I will post some more pics when I get a bit of this worked up.
Thanks for the input!
Orrum, I get there really is no rock safe in your presence!!
Lithic, I found some red jasper, could have been wood but no grain showing and a bit of crystaline quartz. I have not found agate but will keep an eye open for it when I get a chance to go back.
Robin, I will get a cab going when I get some slabbed.

Lovely colour to it.
Also, you got a fab avatar. Just looked at it and instantly got "wild horses" on my mind.

I cut up a bit more of this material. The limb piece took a nice shine as did the small piece. I also cut a 9" section that I found up the hill bit but it was soft and did not show much grain. A yard rock for sure.
I have not cabbed any yet but I will get to it when I get a chance...

Nice stuff! Even as a yard rock, interesting and attractive.
