I am trying to learn
« on: October 07, 2014, 11:37:58 AM »

I have always been interested in archaeology and artifacts. I had a strong desire to make arrowheads and other points from stone recently and that has been taking up most if not all of my time when I am not at work. I have developed a GREAT respect for our ancestors as I find knapping to be very difficult. I probably could make a killer point to be hafted on an arrow and it would be effective. But today, knapping has turned into an art form. Just take a look around at knapped points and knives and you will see what I mean. So if any of you knap, I would love to see your work. Also if any of you have collected artifacts I would love to see them.

I am too embarrassed to show my work as it just doesn't meet even close to the high standards set today by knappers. If I get a point that is still short but a satisfactory point nonetheless. I will post that.

I went to Google and put in for tutorials on knapping that I thought might be helpful for you.  The entire first page is either tutorials, ebooks, or other things that might prove useful.

https://www.google.com/search?q=flintknapping+tutorial&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&channel=sb

Hope that helps.
I hope jcinpc finds this posting and responds because he knows a lot of folks who knapp, and he might have some good information for you.

I also found a huge amount of images.  If you click on some of the images in the link here they might take you to some sites with good information.  Not to mention the images are just good rock candy anyways for those of us with rock addictions...

If you post your work it would help us appreciate how difficult learning to knap really is, please don't be shy as we all have struggled making when we start. Starting and trying are the important parts, success eventually follows.

I watched all 5 parts of making a Newnan point, interesting, could I make one, no, but I have a better understanding of knapping that I never had before. Thanks for the link.

This is first point that I have considered even worthy of posting. The other efforts are pure garbage. It is knapped from Obsidian. Thanks for looking.

That's a pretty awesome looking point!  I think you did a fine job!   :icon_sunny:
I'm unable to give you any pointers to improve upon it, but as they say, keep at it!

Maybe these will help. I found the VCR tapes worth it. You can watch them over and over on your big screen.

I'm still interested in knapping but I have put it on the back burner for now because I am more interested in trying to get a profitable online business going with my cabochons.
