New here and new to Lapidary
« on: September 11, 2018, 03:05:47 AM »

Hi All,

Just some quick background info. I am new to the lapidary arts. I am more of a rock hound, gold prospector and metal detectorist. My Lapidary back ground got started about a month ago when I purchased another drunken craigslist buy =) . I bought a large collection from an older gentleman getting out of the hobby. I originally bought to resell the equipment and slabs but then started to play with the stuff and really enjoyed it. So now I have 100's of pounds of slabs and rough. The equipment I got

Diamond Pacific Pixie 6 wheel
Raytech 10" Auto Feed Saw
Inland  Band/Jig Saw
Inland Swap Top 6" Saw
Loretone 15" Flat Lap
3 drum tumbler Loreton
diamond pacific MT-4SV Micro sonic Tumbler
Bench Grinder with polish pads
And lots and lots and lots  of slabbed material. I would say atleast 200 different types 500 pounds or so total from Jade to Blue Mountain Jasper. Also came with everything else the gentleman had the had to do with the hobby books, tons of grits and accesories, extra blades, wheels, stencils and tons more. I am slowly getting used to working with some of the stuff, have cut 10-20 cabs so far. I look forward to reading and learn as much as I can from the forum.

Welcome Tz1,  When you decided to get in the game you made it with a plunge.  You purchased a nice array of toys and should enjoy the learning process as much as the end product.  So tell us where you are from so we can try to envision the stuff that you are finding in the trove and in your exploits of the field.  BTW the Pixie is small enough and efficient with water so you can take it with you in your travels  as long as you have the power outlet.

It was a deal I couldn't pass up, so I just dove in. I am actually not sure how all the toys work yet or what they are even used for. I have only used the pixie and the inland band saw and bench polisher so far. I am from way Upstate NY (Lake Champlain) so I rock hound a little locally and Vermont and I gold dredge (another cl buy) in NH. I will try to get some photos of my first cabs post up later.

Welcome from Northern Arizona!   :hello:

Sounds like you made a serious score there!  We have lots of knowledgeable folks on the board.  Ask any questions you have and take pictures of the rock you got with that equipment.  We love us some pictures!

Thank you.

Other pictures are one of all the slabbed material thats bagged and tagged.
a couple pictures of some material that looks some what desirable Blue Mt Jasper slabs (I think I have some softball size rocks of the same material) and a picture of some really nice IMO ocean jasper.

Very nice job on the poppy jasper and the rest of your cabs!

It sure does look like you scored some really nice rock.  The Blue Mountain and OJ are drool-worthy!

Nice poppy jasper. That blue mountain jasper, the premium stuff with the good patterns is pretty expensive to buy.  They were asking like $20 for a slab

Had some time earlier, trying some new material and shapes. I need some more work and feel on the softer stuff for sure.
