Turkish Colla Wood Cabochon
« on: December 10, 2018, 01:08:51 PM »

Work has been super busy the last few months :(, so this is one of the few I've finished recently. I love this material.

Very nice. Looks like it may have a bit of copper minerals in there.

Nice cab!  That colla wood is awesome stuff, but a bit too expensive for my blood.

Is it petrified wood? From what location?

Hi Lithic, yes it's petrified wood from Turkey. Here's some info I found:

Colla Wood is a rare blend of petrified wood and minerals that have infused the wood over time. These minerals are associated with copper deposits, and include chrysocolla, malachite, and azurite. In fact, the name Colla Wood comes from the chrysocolla that is found in this fossilized wood.

Colla Wood was found in 2012 in central Turkey near the town of Zile, by people who were prospecting for gold.

And yes, it is a little pricey. I paid $55 (including shipping) for two decent sized slabs, which I feel was a bargain. Hopefully I can get some more decent cabs from them!

Interesting. The copper infused and replaced wood from Indonesia is also available and pricey.

Ya, I have one little piece of that. I've been too afraid to try to cut it so far :p.

Just saw this cab - really nice work and great material!  I saw some of this for sale at the Tucson show and it fetched a scary price!
