Outrageous Cab Contest June 2017
« on: June 02, 2017, 07:36:58 PM »

Rules:
1) Cab must be made by you.
2) Cab must be made within the time period of this contest.  Contest begins on the first of the month and ends on 11:59 p.m. on the last day of the month.  NO pulling old cabs from your storage baskets!
3) As long as the basic shape is considered a cab it's golden.  You can enter intarsias and carved top cabs such as cameos etc.  After all, this is the OUTRAGEOUS cab contest!  We love free form cabs!  Pull out the stops and give us the best you have!
4) One entry per person please!
5) Please show photos of your slabs and preforms if you can so we can see your thought process and how you did things.
6) No finished jewelry pieces.  Just the cab.
7) Cab sets are OK.
8) This is only for bragging rights and your cabochon photo posted up top in the forums unless someone posts a lapidary related prize and wants to ship it to the winner of the contest.

Let the games begin!!!   :toothy10:

I was told that this slab is from a limb cast.  Other than than I don't know what the opaque material is.  I chose this stone because of its combination of opaque, translucent and transparent layers.  The first photo is of the slab complete with the 40 x 30 mm cab outline and cut lines marked on the slab.  The second and third photos are of the topside of the finished cab and a closeup of the top side, showing a face.  The forth photo is of the back (flat) side of the full cab also showing several faces.  The fifth photo shows the back side with some back lighting.  The sixth photo shows a more intense back lighting helping to display the difference between the transparent and translucent layers surrounding the opaque matrix.  The seventh and final photo is a close up of the back side of the cab with the intense back lighting.  In this shot I see a Buddha up on the mountain looking down upon the much bigger being (or gigantic statue) gazing out on the horizon with robe covered outstretched arms.  If I was doing this cab over again, I'd probably reverse the front and back sides, now that I've looked at the completed cab closely.

Interesting entries, both of them.
The Limb-cast provides a multitude of possibilities for pictures when you play a little with light.

Working on a Montana agate right now. Torn on the shape, so still re-cutting it, to get something resembling a balance.
Will join you folks in a few days.

I've never seen banded argillite before.  It polishes up really well!

I found out cropping of it while atv'ing and got a few hundred pounds. I guess there is suppose to be some in a dam up there that they pulled out of a tunnel some time back.

Been out of the loop for awhile between work and rockhound trips. Went to Grouse Creek,Utah the weekend before Memorial Day weekend, then Jackpot,Nv Memorial Day weekend, took four days to work then off to McDermit & Graveyard point for a week with JhonP, had a great time, Jhon is a blast to hang out with and a hard core rockhound!

This is a piece of Jasper from the Texas Springs area near Jackpot, had a interesting pattern, so here you go.

Ok, my turn.
Montana Agate

Simple straight forward material, yet managed the need to reshape 4 times over and ended up with a Jellybean. :)

Not so much a Jelly Bean.  More like a transparent mud-puppy (a salamander).  Cool!  ;-)
