Ok I just decided to make a single thread that as I finish up a new looking to me piece i'll post in as to not make 7 new posts a week at times, though usually i only do a piece every couple weeks. It has been alot more lately.
so these are from the last two days.

The top setting is gorgeous! I love the Flower Onyx stone and the setting is also very nice. My fav though is the regency.
-
two exceptional stones in two very nice settings, the one reminds me of the sixties and the other of outer space.
-
I like them both, it would be hard to put the lower stone in a more elaborate setting without pulling attention away from the stone?
-
Cut this opal and set this weekend, not alot of flash but it worked.

Very pretty. Kudos! :icon_sunny:

very nice, i like it!

Very pretty, I like the unique design. I don't think I have seen that style of wire before, what supplier carries that wire or is this something you made? Grats on a lovely piece.

I have to believe it came from RIO, but i'll grab the info from the tag tonight.
Thanks
-
Wow, great creative work on all your pieces.
Did you grab the info from the tag?
I'd also like to know about that wire, as I haven't seen it around either...
you did a great job with it.

Sorry for some reason, for the last week+ I have been getting a 404 forbidden page from the host when trying to come to this site, not sure why my IP block was blocked but it was. I just randomly try and today it has worked. Bad news though as rio no-longer carries this wire.

Yep I only have about 18 inches left. I added a twisted pattern wire to my cart for my next rio order and hoping it to be similar. You couldn;t really zoom in enough on there sight but it was the same gauge. I'll post it once it arrives (waiting for them to receive and process my scrap).

i love everyone of your cabs shown. not familiar with the victoria stone. which one is that?

That is the blue stone in the double stone pendant with the opal. I will have to check it maybe a bridewell. I have cut both types and occasionally they are similar.
-
what a beauty that is. do you know the history of the Victoria stone? at first i thought the victoria stone was the one where queen victoria (from england) had her mourning jewlery made with. i understood it to be a type of Jet. mourning jewlery was the rage for quite some time, hence, i was looking for a black cab.

A few from this weekend after the kids went to bed. Lots of first for, first time silversmithing a inlay ring, first inlay, also first cold connection rivet. I'll call it a success. I also have full construction pictures of the ring if interested, no idea if I did it correct but it worked. They can be scene here https://www.facebook.com/pg/murphystonejewelry/photos/?tab=album&album_id=359464267829330

Wow that is an amazing job for your first inlay ring! I haven't tried one but have been yearning to try an inlay ring myself. Fantastic job on all the pieces and am always impressed by your work. I had thoughts about going down to the Holland Lapidary School to take a session on inlay but was put off by having to take the other pre-req classes like faceting. Some of the classes I would have to take beginning cab making which just seems silly with what I have done so far but your work just makes me want to experiment.
On the Charoite did you use a diamond band saw to cut the curve on the back of the stone to fit the ring size or just grind to shape with a foredom or dremel?

Give it a try, the total process took me about 4 hours not bad imo for a first time. 3 hours for the ring and hour to take the stone from slab to inlay.
I actually just used the edge of my hard wheel :eek. If you do a ring similar to this, the one thing I learned was it would be easiest to fit the stone to the inner shank before actually building the ring. That way your not doing it blind and can see the backside and edges, or do it before putting on the top ring. Not sure if you looked at the facebook link, but the pics are pretty self explanatory. I just used sheet and 10G square wire (4 pieces) ( a little too thick at 2.6mm) I have ordered some 12 and 14 gauge as well as corresponding rectangular wire for some rings ill try this weekend.
Thanks for looking and the compliments, glad you enjoy the work.

@irockhound
And by the way super jealous of your rough stock. It looks like you have a like for sagenite and plumes like I do. I have been cutting a bunch of old San Carlos Sagenite lately, I love the golden sprays. Do you have any of the horse canyon that contained the blues more so than just green?

that's a beauty

This green velvet obsidian came off the bench last night tarnished the outer surround.

I really like that one. Velvet obsidian is beautiful and I love the setting you did on that one! :occasion14:
-
I probably have over a thousand lbs. of Horse Canyon. When you say blues are you thinking agate color or when the moss has the bluish hue to it.

I like the idea of the back on the Bird of Paradise piece (will keep the crystal top from snagging when worn over a sweater).
Thanks I kept it because when laying it out I noticed it gave a mirror reflection and appearance of more depth at some angles, but for certain snags will be avoided and a key benefit.
-
Don't you just love the road back to the Sheeps Bridge site? One of the worst roads I have driven. We drove after a rain and our vehicles were literally 3 inches taller as the mud had caked an added 3 inches to the outside diameter of our tires. I took photos it was so funny.

A completed pietersite ring, as well as one in progress that I am hoping will be a great pattern when revealed.

ooooooh, very petty that peitersite.

Forgive my ignorance in this question, but how do you get the curvature just right? Do you make the stone first, then form the bracelet around it? You do beautiful work!

Thanks! I do the silversmithing first then cut the stone to match. I have 4inch to 8inch wheels as well as the convex carving style wheels (needed mostly for rings). It is just a bunch of time consuming eyeballing the way I do it. This one came out to be about the same curve of a 6inch wheel so I could use it and pressure on the soft wheels to get it just right. I think in the future i'll be more specific on these big pieces to set the curve close to a existing wheel.

Love the rings. My wife has done some elementary silversmith but I have yet to do any. The class I want is at the same time as my stint as a monitor in our cab lab. Anyhow, we have been examining your photos and can't figure out how you get from the step where the stone is clamped into the ring (I assume that's for the adhesive to cure?) to the finished ring. Could you share, please.

All your work is beautiful, but somehow that bracelet tag completely blows me away. :hello2:

The way you create the curvature is very impressive.
Did you create that fire bezel for the opal? I have never seen that bezel before. It’s another awesome piece.

I Just grind it out like you would any cab on wheels. I have no idea if anything I do is normal or correct though as I am self taught, never taken a class or anything. So there could be a better or more correct way.

Sorry, I was asking about the silver smithing process that takes the ring from the condition shown where the stone is set in the groove to the finished ring, not the stone shaping process.

Just a whole bunch of filing and polishing. I cut off the excess inner wall, then file everything smooth and polish. see if you can see these pictures https://www.facebook.com/pg/murphystonejewelry/photos/?tab=album&album_id=359464267829330 (https://www.facebook.com/pg/murphystonejewelry/photos/?tab=album&album_id=359464267829330) again I am self taught this could all be completely wrong by normal standards

So happy with how this piece turned out it was something I had never done before and not sure really how the idea even came to me other than seeing a piece of scrap wire on my bench. These pictures are before final cleanup and polish.

Now that is cool! What a great what to show off a piece of rutilated quartz. I have a piece that needs to be carved/finished that is quite long that would benefit from a setting similar to what you did. Can I steal your idea?

Ooh. Me too? Is it ok if I give something similar a try as well?I have a special piece I have been agonizing over and I think something similar in terms of technique could be the solution to setting it. Thank you so much for sharing. I LOVE it!

I used 2x5mm sterling wire on this rutilated piece. It seemed to have just the right amount of tension to snap the stone into after it was formed.
For my next piece I will fill the drill holes on the outside where I used my setting bur on the inside for the main stone. Wish I wouldn't have left them, I still may go back and fill them. Just kinda scared to keep popping the stone in and out and need to be sure the diamonds will be fine with the heat of the torch.
Also should have done a nice inlay jump ring at the top but again will have to pop the main stone to solder it up. eeeK
-
Thanks! Your ideas are all very creative. I'm looking forward to seeing what else you come up with. Do you think the holes that you drilled to pop the stone in and out of would work if you didn't drill them all the way through the wire? I think I will experiment with some scrap and see what happens. :icon_sunny:

Yes, but out of habit I just drilled all the way through. I may go back and fill them with silver wire and solder it up on the outside. I know this is possible because I had gotten one diamond pilot hole out of place and filled it to drill correctly.
With a good bur set I am sure you could work the perfect notch to set. I started flying blind and used drill bits before thing oh my setting bur would make a perfect seat for this.

We have one, but fewer drawers. We use it to store our slabs we'll never cut because they're too pretty and other higher-end rough. They are handy and now that I've seen your use, I'll have to keep my eye out for another!

I found myself putting my top shelf slabs in it as well. I picked up some fleece from joanne's fabric as a door buster and it cost me $25 to spray glue and line the drawers. Seemed a must for cabs and finished work.
-
If we ever acquire another one, I think I'd get that stuff they use to line silverware boxes to prevent tarnish. It would be great to have a place to store my metal as well as jewelry.

I worked 25 years for a Major Car manufacturer's Design office. Since we used to do everything by hand with blueprints and sketches and we had tons of these flat file drawers. One day the color and materials girl who was responsible for the new car colors decided she wanted a bunch of them for her new area but they were the "wrong color white" for her area. Now we had a massive paint booth for spraying the car designs but instead of repainting them they took a fork lift and started dumping them in the 40 yard haul off dumpster. I backed up my truck and told them start dumping them here and got 8 or 9 of them in several trips. Ours were 4ft wide and 3ft deep with 5 drawers for Architectural "E" size sheets. They are indeed awesome for keeping sorted slabs, mineral specimens, cabs, pretty much anything. They are built strong and will carry a ton of weight without drawers sagging etc.. Love em and agree if you ever see any grab them as you will love them.

These managed to come out of the weekend, but wrecked 3 pieces in the final stages, one was impressive as I closed some hollow square wire, and it made a nice pop when I later heated it from some trapped flux / water.. Don't mind the learning and time, but hurts to loose the silver.
