cibu-d 'halibut hook'
« on: July 22, 2018, 03:04:07 PM »

Earlier in the year I had the privilege to visit the Seattle area and visit Frank and Mike who were awsome. I was inspired to use some Boulder Creek BC jade from Michael for a cibu-d the local Makah tribes name for their traditional halibut hook. The fishermen reading this will recognise this as a circle hook. Halibut are like giant flounder and live on the bottom of the sea. These hooks were traditionally made out of wood with a bone or metal spike and were quite large 30cm/12in.

Colour is a little less bright than the next photo, this is great jade to cave with a nice tight grain and vibrant green colour, a bit challenging to finish and polish.

The initial sketches from my internet research.

Beautiful! The state and tribes recently did an experimental fishery that used these traditional hooks to see if the by catch could be lowered when in pursuit of halibut. Most of our native rockfish are endangered and many of the oldest rockfish , some near 200 years old were being unintentionally caught by halibut fishers. The test was deemed a success and more testing lies in the future.
