Rules:
1) Cab must be made by you.
2) Cab must be made within the time period of this contest.  Contest begins on the first of the month and ends on 11:59 p.m. on the last day of the month.  NO pulling old cabs from your storage baskets!
3) As long as the basic shape is considered a cab it's golden.  You can enter intarsias and carved top cabs such as cameos etc.  After all, this is the OUTRAGEOUS cab contest!  We love free form cabs!  Pull out the stops and give us the best you have!
4) One entry per person please!
5) Please show photos of your slabs and preforms if you can so we can see your thought process and how you did things.
6) No finished jewelry pieces.  Just the cab.
7) Cab sets are OK.
8) This is only for bragging rights and your cabochon photo posted up top in the forums unless someone posts a lapidary related prize and wants to ship it to the winner of the contest.
Let the games begin!!!   :toothy10:

A free form I cut from what is becoming very rare now, true imperial rhodonite from my region.

Here we go! Turritella anyone! This was sitting behind my cab machine when I cleaned up the other day. The preform was already done for me. I liked the contrast of the snails and the dark colors so I finished both sides

August's about over so I'll jump in with this Luna Agate cab.  Looking at the slab I thought it would be fairly easy to get a nicely centered "eye" but when I started cutting I discovered lots of hidden microfractures.  I recut it 3 times in an effort to eliminate most of them, so the final stone is much smaller than my first one.  Good luck to all!

For the August Cab Contest here is a TriColor Obsidian that we collected at Glass Buttes, Oregon back in 2008 or 2009.

It's referred to as tricolor rather than mahogany as you can see in the final pictures. When backlit the colors are mahogany, black and clear.

I plan on backing this cab with a front surface mirror in order to enhance the internal reflectivity. I hope it works. I've order a small piece but it hasn't arrived yet. Once I get it backed I'll post a new picture.

Similar obsidian comes from Davis creek.  It makes great arrowheads.  Looking forward to see how the mirror dublet works. Sometimes it's hard to see the cool patterns without backlighting

Hi All

Wow that looks like a piece that I have setting on my desk. I am planning to take it to the club Saturday to cut a slab off it.

I got this in the late 70s ore early 80s. I did post picts here and it was thought to be petrifed wood. It was sold to me as mahogany obsidion. I will take better pics and post in the ID section

Guess I wont be in the contest this time. Working OT and it is so hot.

Bless

Shawn,

After you cut the slab, hold it up to a light or put a flashlight behind it. I didn't realize what I had until it was cut and back lit.  I have thought about how to make jewelry with this but couldn't figure out how to show off the internal structure. I hope the front surface mirror works because I have some "Black" obsidian collected at the same time which shows amazing swirls of black and clear when back lit.
