Amazing amathyst
« on: February 01, 2017, 06:26:11 PM »

Submitted by Dr. John Cunninghan, Professor Emeritus, Western New Mexico University
I received this from an old field camp student.   He was told that, "that these huge Brazilian amethyst geodes were formed in hollow logs.  If that is so, peeling away the matrix should be no problem.  Regardless, they are sure spectacular."

I found this here http://rollingstonesgms.blogspot.com/

I never seen one like this before.

"Gonna' drink muddy water, and sleep in a hollow log..." as Jimmie Rodgers sang in "Blue Yodel."

But amethysts like that don't sleep in hollow logs.  They formed in huge gas bubbles inside flood basalts in the Parana Basin in Brazil/Uruguay.  Most of the monster vugs like that are mined in Uruguay's Artigas region on the border with Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul.

Mining them is a pretty interesting and involved process.  It's described in some detail in the Lithographie LTD publication "Amethyst." which like its other publications is great eye candy and a go-to reference.

Wow! Way too amazing to chop up IMO. This belongs in a really good gem museum display, like the one at the Museum of Natiral History in NY or even the Peabody in Boston.
