Hello from Denver
« on: May 24, 2023, 09:29:26 AM »

Hey Folks,
I just joined  and wanted to say hello.
I am a retired disabled guy who has always loved rocks. I collected them as a child, had subscriptions to R&G, and have even tried my hand at jewelry. Last Thanksgiving my father gave me his old facetron faceting machine. I have been bitten by the bug. Since then I have purchased a new Ultra-tec. I have joined a couple of local rock clubs too. One of the clubs has a sub group that deals with faceting and cabbing. I just bought an old cabbing machine and I will begin a thread on that shortly.

A little bit about me. I was born with a wrench in my hand so to speak. most of my working life has been dealing with maintenance and repair of all kinds of equipment. A few of my past(and still current) hobbies include astronomy, music and fishing. I build and repair vintage stereo  gear - specifically vacuum tube stereo amps and gear. I recently have started trying to organize my garage. That has turned into an effort to restore and rebuild my old 1940's to 1960's machinery - can you say cast iron?

Enough for now.

Hello and I hope to get to know many of you.

Lapidary may be one of the most complete hobbies one could choose - from geology, chemistry, and optics, to designing building, refurbishing, and maintaining equipment with all the electrical and mechanical details, to safety and ergonomics, to aesthetics of what you are making out of those stones, to economics (even if just a hobby)... A truly endless endeavor that can bring together such a variety of your interests and talents. It is no wonder you've been bitten by the bug!

Mechanical abilities will be useful.  I have one old Covington slab saw that likes to act up about once per month just to keep me on my toes.  The machinery can be as interesting as some of the rocks.  Welcome and do paricipate in the discussions.
