Stabilized Turquoise in need of some love
« on: November 06, 2016, 03:31:41 PM »

I have a piece of stabilized Chinese Chalk turquoise that has a nice pattern, it's large and I want to use it in a pendant for myself...
The rub?  Apparently the upper left hand corner broke at some point and they put it back together with stabilizing agent.  I need to grind that stabilizing agent down because it's a blob on the stone.  I'm not worried about the chips on the edge, that will be covered with beads when I'm done and not visible.

How do I grind down that stabilizing agent?
I have a dremel and lots of various rubber and stone points, so if you know what bit I can use to get it ground down and smooth that will be great.

I only paid about $4 for the stone, so I am not going to attempt returning it, as it's just not worth my time and energy to contact the company and take it to the post office and pay for postage.

Grind away with your cab machine.  That's the only way you will ever get the glue to blend with the stone.

Use one of the stone points (barrel shaped if you have it) and gently grind the resin down to almost the stone.  Then take one of the rubberized grinding points to take it down to the stone to smooth it flush with the stone.  The whole stone is likely mostly resin, so it probably won't cut into the surrounding stone any quicker once you get it flush.  Use the least abrasive point once you get close to the stone and then maybe touch it up with some Zam on a felt or other polishing point once you're down to the stone.

Good luck!

P.S.  If you want, send it to me and I'll do it for you.   :icon_sunny:

I don't own a cabbing machine, only a dremel.

No worries you will eventually get to see the finished stone.  I just have to get it mailed out first.   :icon_tongue:
My life this week has been a touch hairy trying to get things in order for family coming in a week from today.
