Aventurine or Amazonite ID help needed
« on: March 24, 2023, 09:48:46 AM »

Okay, the more I googled aventurine or Amazonite, and the more I read, the more confused I became. White quartz, multi-color, metallic sheen...  This piece has those. It also has clear areas that are very translucent and would cut cabs that look like Jade or B grade Chrysoprase. I posted pictures under new cabochons but I really wonder if this is Amazonite or not.
No sunlight for pictures, heck it is snowing right now.......

Unfortunately the hardness, specific gravity, and even the refractive index of amazonite and microcrystalline quartz are very close.

You would have to have a careful look under magnification to try and discern differences in fracture and crystal habit. Having confirmed reference samples would help.

As a feldspar it has perfect cleavage planes and when I have collected and cut it these are obvious and unlike the grainy tooth you show on your piece which I would liken more to a quartz.

I agree with Steve, the irregular flaky sides seem to suggest quartz, not feldspar. But hard to tell just from these photos, have a look under magnification.

This is remarkabl similar to either in the rough but I would say adventurine from the cabs.
