Black Jade done and new WIP
« on: June 12, 2017, 03:56:25 PM »

Drawn up last year as a proposed summer-project and never done.

So a few weeks ago, I finally got started

Had my daughter draw up some flowers and scratched out the basic design.

Did not like it, and already thought of taking the flowers off entirely, but then, somehow today I got into a flow that changed things a little.
Still not happy, but its a start to hopefully better things.

Round two: going a bit deeper undercutting on both sides. Does not look like it in picture, but lots of material removed since last picture.

Thanks for looking, Kurt

Thanks 55fossil

How do you like the jade?

A few years ago, I made a trade with an Australian lady, who seems to have that particular jade in spades and she send me a good 3 pounds of it. I'm not a fan of green jade (except one particular type of colour that is waaaayyyy out of my league financially) So I rather dabble in white and black nephrite. While polish is always an issue, the cutting process seems much easier than a lot of other materials. And thus far, I can be happy with each and every piece I got out of this black material.

It looks like, once a year I get the urge to work with it.....

In the meantime, finished the cutting (including above flower and top), and drilled hole for cord.
Sanding the remainder, but no time for polish until next weekend.
But no pictures yet.
Picture here this morning. Overcast outdoor gives it an unusual colour. Like it.

Best regards, Kurt

Kurt, you are to hard on yourself.
I think this piece is beautiful.  The flowers remind me of Orchids and the bamboo is well done.  It's a piece I think anyone would love to wear.

Thank you all for the kind feedback.

As I cut outdoors, the constant rain over the past 13 days did not help much for the start of my summer holiday, but somehow got some work done in the short brakes....

Jade is done

And new project started for this months challenge:
First up; Montana Jellybean

Picture is rather dark, just like the weather. :( Will have to get new ones once the sun returns.

And, Indian Blackskin for the challenge: Rough cut

Thanks for looking, have a great week, Kurt

Thank you.

Robin, Agate is just so hard to work, but the jade is definitely the direction I hope to take eventually with pretty much every piece.

the work is phenomenal...i thought jade was harder than agate to carve? and both just being tough to carve, period.  what tools do you use?

Naturally, both are not the easiest stones. :) But while the nephrite is more durable of the two (despite being rated 6-6.5 vs 7 for agate) and easier for my hands to form as it does not have the tendency to crack at every turn when getting a bit hot. Also, my burs seem to have a much easier time with both, Nephrite as well as Jadeite, than agate.

I use cheap Chinese made plated burs, and every time I do any agate, I go through a lot of them every session. Small details would/are killing burs like early morning mosquitoes. And small details are even more hassle with the added problem of taking a lot longer to sand out.

I find nephrite as easy to work with as much softer material like serpentine or .............
