« on: November 20, 2016, 08:44:12 AM »

I have some pet wood that is black, I took some to the rock shop and Glen said carbonized petrified wood.
it was collected in tillamook area of oregon.
All river cobble and river tumbled.

I cut one awhile back, but all i seen was black, black black back like Onyx

I've seen and collected some of this material from the coast at Bandon. I have heard it called petrified myrtle wood. It never really appealed to me so I haven't worked any, though.

There is some all black petrified wood found over by Gt. Falls Montana. Interestingly it is bleached in Purex after being slabbed. Producing some pretty cool patterns. Don't know if this treatment would work with your wood or not. Maybe worth a try.

I have a 8"x6" slab I got in Salt Lake city at a show auction. I have not cut any either. Also some pieces from IOWA with pattern.

The black charred petrified wood coming out of parts of China and Asia is called Jet.  What you are showing looks a lot like Jet.  It's perfectly possible that there are areas of burnt fossil wood here on this side of the world as well.  Just takes the right conditions to form and voila, American Jet.

Jet (lignite) should be easily identified on the basis of density (heft) alone.  It has a very low specific gravity (1.30) compared to most quartz minerals that are in the 2.60 range.  Opal is slightly less dense at around 2.15.

It is. Lignite: a soft brownish coal showing traces of plant structure, intermediate between bituminous coal and peat.

I dont get to do anything with it now.
I washed it up, had it on the wash machine. I guess wifey claimed it for her own as i noticed it in her decorative arrangement in the back yard this morning.

Or she just wanted it off her washing machine.  Go reclaim it.
I know for one, if Peter leaves things on my Washing machine I get a touch irritated by it, and typically remove the item and put it back in the garage where he typically had gotten it from.
