Title: Mexico City and Valle de Bravo (west of M. City) - anything to be found?
Post by: Greg Hiller on April 19, 2019, 01:56:23 PM
Looks like I might be here in June for some hang gliding.  I know it might be hard to collect any rocks on our own in Mexico, but curious of what material we might be able to find?

I know there are some silver mines in that area. If nothing else, you could look through the list of mines on Mindat (https://www.mindat.org/feature-3980621.html) and see if any are producing material you'd find interesting. Sometimes the miners at an active operation will sell you some pieces or let you look thru the spoils for a few $.

There's always the legendary green obsidian of Teotihuacan (about 30 miles from Mexico City). I've seen the material  on TV and it looks cool, but your best bet to get any might be a shop or private collector. I have no clue how you would track them down....but it would make a sweet souvenir.   :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

We actually found a few pieces of so-so agate and a piece of amethyst just around the hang gliding launch site.  Gliding was awesome though, I had an hour and a half long flight!
