As promised/threatened before, let me start a post of pics in regard to Montana Agate.
I hope that we can continue this post by having you add your own favorite pieces, and if it suits admin, they can make it a sticky, easy to find for newcomers and/or people looking for material in general.
Montana, to me, is one of the most versatile materials to work with. Can be frustrating at times, but is always good for surprising results.
To me, Montana gave me the starting-point into carving proper. Had done Fire Agate before that, but even now, I do not consider working Fire Agate as carving. :) At the time, I just discovered Forums, and dove into virtually any material, trying to learn cabbing and broke too many things. In order not to waste the material I started to carve simple grooves.
Literally, the first carving ever attempted:

What an awesoem thread! Yes this would be a great place for folks to post their cabs of Montana Agate! :headbang:
-
Where are all the Montanas?
Lets see some of your wonderful pieces. :hello2:
-
I agree Kurt, where's the montana piccies from folks?
-
Kurt's work is so awe inspiring that it is hard to put up just a mundane oval or round cabochon that I for one would be afraid to do that, besides I haven't a clue to posting pictures and don't even go there about how easy it is to do, I haven't found it so, so I just don't want to hear about it, OK?
Beautiful work you has shown us Kurt, it is truly awe inspiring :notworthy:
-
Its certainly true, other peoples creations always look better than ones own.
Cant remember having seen anything mundane from you Bentiron........ :notworthy:
-
you've done some awesome work with the Montana agate Kurt; as well as the other materials, hope to see lots more here .
-
Kurt:)
Look at you... what beautiful things you carve:)
It shows your love of rocks and it is infused with your Light:)

You always make me laugh Kurt:)

Oh, those are gorgeous!!! I love agate, and I love the freeform and carved shapes you've made! That's one of my goals, to make interestingly shaped cabs someday.

Dont worry too much about shape. Just let the stone show you where to go.
I usually start with a basic shape, and then just go with what I got. :icon_sunny:

Thanks for the tips! I'm going to do some more work this weekend, but not freeform yet. Just some different shapes.

I think Montana agates are one of my favorite stones. Always full of pleasant surprises.

thats what my problem is too.
I may just put polished rocks around the base and call it a campfire statue

Awesome. I have some Montana Agate that I need to get at as well. Beautiful carving Kurt, I think I need to get started doing that as well. I have a lot on my plate though with Flint Knapping too.
-
Kurt,
Wow! Those are really beautiful, all of them. I especially admire the carvings... what do you use for your tools? (I have a Foredom... is that good enough?)
Thanks!
Jeff

Absolutely. :DRUNKS:

That material is hard work, but when it pans out, its a sight to behold.

Thanks! I'm not trying to steal your techniques, but do you have any favorite bits? And do you use a water drip system? If not, or even if so, what do you use?

Wow! that agate is beautiful. The workmanship is masterful. G :occasion14:reat job working with rocks and gem stones.

Nothing to steal. :) :) If I have to choose a bit; its most likely a medium-sized ball-burr. :DRUNKS:

Just curious: What does your family think of the time you spend carving? You have made great strides and I imagine you spend a lot of time from your busy life working stone.

Just curious: What does your family think of the time you spend carving? You have made great strides and I imagine you spend a lot of time from your busy life working stone.
Not too happy at times, but then again, everyone has different habits that does not involve anyone else within the family.
Kids have their own schedule , interests and activities as they grow up. Wife is very active in Church and community from her country. I could join either side (kids or wife), but feeling to old for one, and don't liking the gossip and ensuing arguments on the other side. So, stones where originally an opportunity to have an activity on my own schedule, without having to wait for anyone else.
I'm not locking myself away when I work stones, so I'm right here in the midst of them when they do have the wish to interact.
Life is busy at times, yes, but a lot of time is used up to commute. I try to get things ready, so I can use that time to do sanding (just like when walking the dogs). And cutting is mostly done Monday - Tuesday when I'm off, but everyone else is out of the house. When time allows, I do try to restrict myself to maybe an hour for fine-tuning on other days.
Overall, because I dont work metal, my wife does not care about this type of pieces (as long as there is no gold, its not going to be worn), and the kids have settled on a piece each, and don't seem to be interested on anything new. :) :) :)
-
We typically do these things for complex internal reasons. It is a very good thing that they help give us an individual focal point to return to in a very busy stressful world not to mention the experience of the wondrous magical stones. I think we are very fortunate.
-
Kurt, you have a very special artistic muse that comes out in your carvings. This one is beautiful! :icon_sunny:
-
We typically do these things for complex internal reasons. It is a very good thing that they help give us an individual focal point to return to in a very busy stressful world not to mention the experience of the wondrous magical stones. I think we are very fortunate.
One of the reasons to try thus hard on carving was my father. He was immensely gifted working with wood, and I knew from small on that he would want us to pick up on his gift. To his disappointment, we never did and both, my brother and I seemed to have turned out pure klots.
That was until I picked up stones and seem to have found a medium that allows me to catch up to him eventually.
Unfortunately, my father has passed now two years already, and never saw anything I made. But it was tremendously satisfying this August going home, and seeing the interest in all pieces from everyone around. From close to 40 pieces given away, I know that 16 have already been set and are worn regularly (a family friend and goldsmith at home has contacted me and cursed me for the irregular shapes :) :) ). That and pieces worn like by the Canadian Lady who wears it for her traditional dances, are the motivation and reward, worthwhile to keep trying to do more and better.
And yes, sitting there, and tinkering away, allows one to completely forget the things that might not be that bright in ones life. Shutting them out for a while is a brilliant way to return to them eventually, with a fresh mind and often with solutions that where so far before.
-
Excellent perspective, may you enjoy many more years with our friends the stones.
-
I like the way you give things away. I have no idea how many pieces I have given away but mine were not such time consuming carvings like yours. What I have in numbers you have in time spent. I have a suitcase with foam layers in it so my pendents have a place to sleep. When there is a gathering of friends or family I will open the case and tell everyone to pick a couple. The fun they have is priceless.
I have a hard time staying focused on one art form so I have tried many different styles but I have to admit that stones have kept me interested much longer than anything else. One of the reasons is that I can do a lot of different things with the stone including the hounding to find them. My last post has four different things that I have finished or am in the middle of. I think that my experimenting and sometimes coming up with something different and being successful at the same time is the biggest draw for me. Being or doing different than everyone else has always been at the top of my list of goals. Fortunately I ended up with the ability to see things a little different than everyone else then bring that idea to a point that is pleasing to the eye most of the time. I also have some real duds out too which is probably the case with most people.
Keep on keeping on or die right?
Jim

Here's a little Montana cab to join the party...

That's a beauty! :blob1:

I've never tried carving, but I do have a love for Montana agates. Here's one I call the heart of Montana for obvious reasons.
(http://i907.photobucket.com/albums/ac274/jakesrocks/Missing%20agate/Cabs/101E0794.jpg) (http://s907.photobucket.com/user/jakesrocks/media/Missing%20agate/Cabs/101E0794.jpg.html)
And don't ignore those end nubs. Some very interesting material there. It just takes a light hand to manage all of the surface fractures.

Nice pattern selection!

I have one I call the heart of Montana also...
Bill

Stonemon, would love to see that one set. Have you set it already?

Sellers often use heels as extras, and I love it! The rind can be a bit tricky to work, but they are looking great.
Here's a little Montana cab to join the party...
Hard to beat that one. The iris effect is just out of this world.
-
Whoa! You guys are knocking my socks off. Those are some gorgeous Montanas! :Worthy:
-
LOL. Speaking of Montanas. I was just talking to a trucker buddy of mine who's also half owner of a rock shop in Billings, Montana. The local indians have been bringing in Montanas by the bucket full to sell. My buddy says they have roughly a ton of Montanas stored in a big storage container. If anyone's interested, I can put you in contact with them.
-
No, this one is still kicking around waiting for someone who knows how to set stones... I just cut them for now. I dream of being able to take them to the next level but for now I just cut them....
Bill
-
Montana agate looks beautiful. Carved is even better. I will be looking out for some though I expect it is not easy to come by in England.
Thanks for showing
Karen
-
I just made the transfer from the other site. It's odd being a Newbie again! Anyhow I'm checking out the site's various functions and hopefully this favorite Montana of mine will show up.

Another beauty! It would be a favorite of mine, too. :icon_sunny:
-
you posted a great set of Montana, Also one of my favorites. I am still looking for good material to cut some more.

-
Awesome work Kurt! Also lots of other folks here have awesome Montanas. I have bad luck breaking with all the fractures etc.
-
Great to see others continuing this tread.
Keep them coming, can't seem to get tired of seeing all the wonderful possibilities in that type of Agate.
-
Another way to use Montana, I did this pendant about four years ago, titled "Fractured". Both sides of the sterling backing were etched. Before setting the stone, the silver underneath was oxidized to blacken the wording, then sealed with Renaissance wax. There was to be a show of politically themed jewelry. Not a big surprise that there weren't enough entries for the show to make! Politics just aren't that pretty.
-
That pendant is very creative. I like it a lot!
-
I know it is an old post, but I just love looking at it again and again! So great carving, I would love to try working with Montana agate too!
-
PM me your address. I have some hiding around here somewhere and I'll send you a few pieces to play with. Might take a while. I have to go to Chicago for a month to take care of my mom's estate, but when I get back (beginning of July) I will send it to you.
-
Here is an older set I made for Art Fairs.
-
Nice ones you got there olgguy. Nice design and impeccable workmanship.
-
Some addictions just will not die!
I love this stuff. Here is a piece I cut today. Nice 3D effect when you rotate it.
Happy, merry, and all of that.
Best,
Bill
-
That's a stunner! :WEEEE:

Looks great Stonemom. 10 apparent layers makes it great for Buddhists. 7 stages of enlightenment plus 3 extra states of buddhahood. :) :)
-
I am adding 2 large (over 60mm) Montana cabs and thought I would throw in a pic of one of Dendritic Agate I personally collected in the old Horse Canyon digs in California. I have never really carved so here it sits because it deserves a professional job. Just thought I would add it because it reminds me of top Montana material.
-
No need carving; there are two stupendous cabs in that dentric material.
-
So awesome to see Montana moss agates...I hound them every summer, when we head home to Montana....
Love cutting them too, just taught myself how to cab and the Montana was the rock to choose...
Great thread.....
-
One of my favorites.
I need to look into trying my hand at carving. I have quite abit of Montana to practice on.
-
These are awesome looking! I am unfamiliar with Montana Agate though. Is that the designation or just the region. Regardless it's very cool!!

Ok, I have lots of favorite rocks, but Montana Moss is quickly rising to the top!
I need to plan a vacation to Montana! Any suggestions where a rock nut might go hounding for this awesome material?
-
Eastern Montana on the Yellowstone is where the Montana agate is found. I like to hunt over around Forsyth and Miles City.
-
I am sitting here with my jaw dropped - I am both stunned by the variations and colors of this amazing stone and in awe of the carvings. I think I need to find me some Montana Agate!! Thank you for sharing this pics!

Thank you.
They are quite alright, but I think I got a long way to go to have results that justify the allocates (spelling?) given.
Eventually, I will need to get some machines that allow precision. Foredome and by hand only go so far....

You've made some truly incredible art! Montana Agate is one of my favorites too! Here are a couple I just finished last week.

Bill, the Montana you posted in Sept. (just above your newest stone, which is great) reminds me of a much smaller stone I made into a ring. Montana offers so many variations it's always a pleasure to cut.

Bill, the Montana you posted in Sept. (just above your newest stone, which is great) reminds me of a much smaller stone I made into a ring. Montana offers so many variations it's always a pleasure to cut.

Yes, endless variations. One of my favorites. Nice ring!

Stonemon - nice cab!
Love that ring, Rick!
Montana heaven! :WEEEE:
-
Thanks for bringing this back up with some super creations.
Timely reminder that I still got some twenty pounds of this material somewhere.......
Time to cut some again.......
-
My latest Montana...

Great dendrite show!
Here's one I cut sometime back that I kinda' like:

I love the salmon color in that one!
-
Nice additions. Particularly like the depth of the piece from Stonemon.

I have viewed this thread several times. They look so good that you never get tired of looking at these stones!

Had the opportunity to cut some more Montana agate this past week. Beautiful cabs! Love the top one and the one on the left is really cool. Great job!
-
Very nice. Top left is my favorite as well.
-
Ahh, there is still life in this post. :) :) :)
Lovely additions. Personally, I like the one in the middle best, shape, shade and all.
Have been away for too long, but shall be back into rocks soon........

HOY MOLY Kurt !!!! Sweet Montanas...

Probably my best Montana agate guitar pick....
Best,
Walt

A 19x14mm cab and it's uncut sister stone, these are mostly grey, you line the phantom up with the girdle and you get nice colour, same as faceting!

Oh, yeah. Awesomeness.

Curved Montana

What a cool shaped Montana. It's almost ... dare I say ... sexy. :icon_sunny:

There's just something satisfying about the Montana

3 from this last week

There are many beautiful agates, but I think it's those things or scenes "floating" in a mist that attract me.

A bit of lemon and pepper for you folks, this will look nice once it's been tumble-polished.
-
Looks nice already...
-
Beautiful! Can I ask what grit it already was done to and what grits you tumble and polish it with? It already looks very nice! I love the color.
-
It's sanded to 8k on SiC paper, and I'm not sure yet! I'm getting close to having enough agate to do my first tumbling and when the club reopens I'll be asking there.

I made this pendant quite awhile ago...montana and blue holley...
edit: i don't know how to get the photo higher resolution, but if you click it it seems better quality...i havent cleaned te pendant for awhile so looks a little unevenly oxidized, but you get the point :)

The materials are so good together, and the design graceful and harmonious. Beautiful piece, good for everyday or dress up.😸
-
Great work. I love the concept of the double ring for movement vs going with a hinge, much cleaner and ties in with the bails nicely. Excelent
-
thanks so much for the kind words...it was one of the first things I made years ago :) I love montana, probably one of my top 3 favourite
materials to cab, and always want to use it in my work
-
Great work! I esp. dig the honeycomb, being an Apprentice Beekeeper :)

At some point, most lapidaries seem to get bitten by the Montana Agate bug. It is my turn!
