Beach Treasure
« on: September 05, 2018, 12:01:18 PM »

Long Point, Whidbey Island heishi and beach beads. I made replica wampum for a jeweler in RI 30 years ago but have avoided shell work due to the toxic dust. With the ultrasonic drill, there is a very minimal amount of sanding so dust is no longer a problem. When my daughter-in-law and granddaughter were visiting, I took them to Long Point and asked them to collect cockle shells. I cut blanks from the cockle shells with the ultrasonic drill and then drilled a hole in the center of the blanks for the bead cord. I made a set of stone beads from beach rocks to complement the shell heishi. Grossular garnet, jasper, and agate. All beads are 6 mm in diameter with 2.5 mm holes.

How beautiful!  It must be so fulfilling to make a piece like that out of all local material from scratch.  I love it!   :icon_sunny:
