"Porcelain Jasper "
« on: September 22, 2016, 05:53:00 PM »

Here's a "Porcelain Jasper" collected earlier this year. I don't think I'll get another from the larger pieces as their is a fracture I didn't see until I started the preform. To bad these really take a shine!

Looks great, I like the pastel colors. The club in Quartzsite goes hounding at a porcelain site in Wiley Wells that we can get huge hunks of blueish pinkish porcelain. The rare one there is a intense purple red!

These are the two big ones, they both had fractures following one of the bands of color. Guess I'll have to go back up!
Phish, I've made a few spheres for people and here's the rules.

I need enough to make two, one for me and one for them.
They get the rock to me I get the sphere back to them (shipping)
I keep the boot
Then your only out shipping

Me and Jhon cut ours into 4" cubes when we trade, keeps shipping down and you can keep the boot for cabbing. And the preform is half done!
Send me a pm if your interested and I'll get you my address. I'm always looking for material I can't get around the Utah area.

:LOLOL: I do the same. Doing one right now.  Most people don't realize the you can only cut a cube the size of the smallest side so cubes are better so they can get a idea of the sphere size. And you can't always get a 4" sphere out of a 4" cube. I like to do 6" ones but it is hard to get a big enough solid rock to cut a cube.

So if you do a sphere as big as you can is it only in even inches or can you fo like 4.5 inches or 3.75 inches?

I cut the rock for as big as I can and the size ends up where it gets round. If I say it is 4" it is more than likely bigger or smaller. Bigger is alway better. I think I will get some bigger cups and go for 8" or 10"
Most I make are 3" to 5"  I do a little one sometimes but I like the big ones :blob1:

1 1/2" diameter. It takes almost as much time to do little ones as it dose the bigger one. Besides you can buy the ones made in China pretty cheep

With lapidary it's always cheaper to get it from China or India etc! LOL

Freight is relative to the load. Send it "round robin". Somebody is headed that way sorta. Also remember Grey Hound still hauls freight, usually for the ticket pricem

Let me see, I could take a few days and drive up north, rent a gas concrete saw, cut it around deep enough to  split with hammer and chisels. So it will fit in my 24" saw. It could be tempting!

I didn't know how big you meant. 300lbs is huge. I'm with Jhon you would have to cut around and double jack to get it split. To bad I'm so far away...

I have broken big rocks with a sledge hammer. Some rock don't like to break. You can end up with a lot of fractures and small broken pieces. I wouldn't do it with a valuable rock unless it was the only way I could get it out
