[ You are not allowed to view attachments ] Thought I'd show one of my latest bits of work.
It's a nice bit of Coober Pedy crystal opal that I've finished. Quite a bright one but the photos don't really do it justice.
My Nikon always shows really vibrant electric blues so I've toned them down a bit. Besides the lovely multi coloured flashes all over, it also has a nice sort of rolling golden yellow flash inside as well! it has a very small sand inclusion on one side that you can see in the video.
As well as the photos, I've also tried to post a link to a video (is the correct way to do it?!)...hope it works OK and please excuse any out of focus bits...opals are difficult to capture at the best of times!

I use an led source that’s developed for video and photography.
Have a look at Zecti. You can use it with battery packs or on mains / car socket. You can change intensity and colour from 3200 - 5600k. Also, a great benefit for video, there's no annoying flicker!
Can you embed video clips in these posts? I’ve put a link to a YouTube clip of the stone but it’d be nice it it just showed without having to click it...!

Thanks for the info. I love the idea that you can change the light's color temperature. Can you give me the model number of the light you're using? I checked the Zecti website but found only camera-mounted LEDs. I need something that can be tripod- mounted. TIA

Hi Gemfeller, I had the same thought when I bought this model. It’s a zt 017, think you can get larger or smaller. Mine came with a cigarette lighter connector and a power adaptor with quite a long cable. I bought batteries and a battery charger separately as it doesn’t come with these, the type you’d slot onto the back of a video camera.
As for the holder connector, there will s a simple camera hotshoe connector that came with mine. It fits into the light assembly by a screw fitting (haven’t checked as still in bathrobe...)which may take a standard tripod screw!
But what I can say is the hotshoe camera fitting it comes with, drilled into the hotshoe plate is a standard tripod thread! This is sort of how I mount mine. The connector is basic but works. If you have a ball or pan and tilt tripod head then you’ll probably have all the movement you need.

That is beautiful! Great job! You definitely should make an Etsy, you must have a ton of stones! It's such an expensive hobby, imagine how much more rough you can buy if you sell some stones...
Do you mind me asking, what wheels and sequence do you recommend? I'm a newbie, but opal is what I'm focused on. I saw some people shape with fine grinding wheels (~600 grit), and others use a more standard sequence. I'm probably about to get all new wheels and sell the ones that came on my Cabking. They've been too frustrating to use.. and I learned on Novas, and they made everything much easier.... they ran so true..
