Cabs-Large Biggs
« on: September 27, 2022, 08:47:47 AM »

Shown are two display cabs made from  material purchased in the 70’s. One cab is 4x3.5” and the other is 7x1.75”.

Biggs must be one my least favorite materials, and yet I really like these cabs. Very beautiful, and a lot of visual interest to soak in. Well done, especially at this size!

Biggs from the '70s. What a treat to see these slabs and what you did with them.

I've seen slabs with like your second one sold as Deschutes in my brief time as a cutter. They had the more "open" patterns like yours shows here. I think a lot of people who really don't know what they have take a "best guess" on IDs like that.

Your first cab is my favorite. Looks like I can see for miles looking over a stormy twilight landscape.

Thanks for posting them here.

Very nice. I remember going to Biggs about 40 years ago when collecting was still happening. Now it is just  a boring collection of gas stations and mini marts.

Is there really no accessible good material in the ground anymore? I think I've never held in my hand any of that true old stock, only some small, boring brown pieces that I found overrated.

Nothing is left in the sense that the deposit has been built upon  and some of it , the collecting was not quite legal to begin with as it was in the road right of way.

Heh - I remember hearing of the "rush" that happened when someone figured out what they had cut through on that road. I guess it was a really big deal for a while there, huh.

The most recent material coming out in any quantity at all was from Rufus, right? Not far away, but nowhere near the same quality.

To be honest most rough dealers moved Biggs to an extent but as cabs it did not sell.

Yeah, it seemed like "everyone" sold Biggs rough once upon a time.

These are such a treat to see! The first one definitely has a spaceship returning to it's home galaxy after a midnight rendezvous in a sagebrush desert... As for the second- is that tight stain banding transfixing or what?!

Definitely two very different feels. Thank you for sharing!
