Conglomerate Hanksville
« on: November 10, 2018, 05:47:37 PM »

I probably shouldn't try to make spheres out of some of the material I run into while out rockhounding, but I'm always looking for usual material. This is collected south of Hanksville. This one kicked my butt had to stabilize twice! 3"

I call it White Dot Conglomerate look at the 3rd picture where did this pure white piece come from among the red, orange, yellow, brown etc.

Beautiful mix of colors.I was cutting  a very hard conglomerate from Mississippi today but the matrix also is odd.I looked it up and the matrix in the Miss stone is a mixture of ilmenite and specular hematite.

Sorry it kicked your butt, but I'm glad you could save it.  It's really neat!

That's a cool piece.  Are you using Opticon for stabilization?

It started out with a bunch of voids, after I finished the rough stage 1,  I used epoxy and filled them in, and after the 400 rough stage, then put it back on the 400 rough cups then finished. I used your basic epoxy as I wasn't worried about the pattern. I did heat the rock up to around 200 degrees to help the epoxy seep in as it's thick.
