Translucent, mossy green with purple areas
« on: July 30, 2022, 06:20:15 PM »

This unlabelled slab I found in collection I bought recently. It's very translucent, and has mossy green inclusions running throughout, much like some green moss agates (though it feels a bit different in my hands). What throws me off are the pastel reddish/purple areas.

Do any of you recognize this material right off the bat?

A lot of rough like that in Oregon. The green is an iron color as is the red just a slightly higher concentration.

Good info as usual from Lithicbeads.

We have a piece here without moss, with red, white, and green all in the same piece. Changes in the percentage of the element giving it color is an interesting bit to consider.

So many locations with green moss/red.  Another from California is the old Horse Canyon beds.  It's impossible to say it is or isn't but I'm going to lean from elsewhere.  Wish I could give more info.  The moss silhouette reminds me of India Moss Agate I have never gotten any of the Indian with Red though, anyone else know it the India Moss agate also goes to red?

Worth noting is that red/purple colouring is diffuse, in patches, and the green mossy pattern appears to have some degree of schistosity to it.

The colors are from iron just different concentrations  and/or reduction states.

Could this be hydrogrossular garnet ("transvaal jade")? Cannot show it in photos, but the material just doesn't feel like chalcedony. There's a more waxy feel to it. I'll check the density and come back here.
