Mystery beads
« on: March 14, 2018, 09:38:14 PM »

I bought these in an online auction as part of an estate lot. They are beautiful, but I am totally stumped as to what they are. I make jewelry, but I'm still pretty much a novice at identifying anything that isn't fairly common. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I thought that at first as well, but it's very green with no blue tones at all

I've seen this before and bought some from Fire Mountain Gems.
They call it Blue Sky Jasper on their site.

Interesting. Even though it's emerald green, not blue at all?

I just looked it up, and while it is similar that's definitely not it.

Blue sky Jasper can also come in shades of green.  It is dyed material, so the dye batches can differ.
This stuff in the link is blue, but it certainly looks like your beads other than being a different color.  I have bought the stuff and had it come in both green and blue in the same strand.

I bought some like that some time ago for my sister and it was called Blood Stone from a vendor out of India. I have been scouring my boxes and other hiding spots for off the wall beads and I can not seem to find the ones I kept with labels. Bit Blood stone is what they look like from my purchase. I have been looking for more to go with a jasper piece that I am carving.
Now I want to know if that is what I bought.

I looked at a bunch more online, and the previous poster was right. It is the "blue sky" jasper. Sometimes it just comes out green with the dye they use apparently. Bloodstone has bits of red in it, and these beads have no red at all. Plus, all of the bloodstone I've seen is a much darker green than these beads. If you are looking for these ones though, you can definitely find them on Fire Mountain Gems. I checked. The ones I have are 12mm. My only caution would be if you are looking for that green color, you may end up with something much more blue since the color seems to vary quite a bit.
