New art medium for me
« on: October 07, 2017, 08:37:57 PM »

I've asked a number of questions about aluminum and such recently.  Now that I've gotten past several obstacles, etc., I was able to finally put the grinder to the metal.

It's still a work in progress, but even the initial grinding passes have resulted in a nice effect.

Hey everyone - I have now seen a finished piece, and it is unbelievably impressive! One of the coolest things I've seen.

I say unbelievably because there's no way to visualize how it looks just from seeing a still photo. The piece in progress above doesn't have any color or surface coat on it, but even if it did there's no way to imagine the overall effect of the light playing across a piece as it moves. I don't see how even a 2-D video could do it justice.

I was honestly amazed that anyone could take a flat piece of sheet metal and produce a work of art like I saw yesterday.

Here's where to see some finished pieces: http://nightstoneart.com/

Wow.  Been a while since I made that piece.  It's in my office here next to me.  I've...  advanced a bit further than that.

This one is what I finished today.  It's currently waiting for the resin to cure.

Jon, you have a real talent for these!  Looks fantastic and I second what Vince said about linking a video if you do one (which you should).  That would be an awesome way to show the light play off of them.   :WEEEE:

There will definitely be videos. :)   "handling" cure is done around 9pm tonight.  I'll be able to take pictures of the final then.  After that it needs another 48hours to fully cure. :)

We've now had our first successful dust/hair/crap-less resin pour.
We were looking at buying PVC and such to build a clean room, and wound up getting a deal on a 6' x 8' x 7'(high) green house that is a metal pipe structure, covered with thick durable plastic.
Cindy had me build a custom cover for curing artwork.  It's made of PVC pipe and covered with plastic.   Through the use of this thin film plastic that is made for insulating windows (the stuff you use a hair dryer on to make it clear), she wound up creating a heavy static charge on this cover.   Over night, it collected *all* the hair and dust inside the tent.
End results, I'm looking to find a way to heavily charge plexiglass sheets, or similar, to act as an attractor inside the tent (which is in our living room).

I did ask her to use half the recommended resin amount on the Plumeria piece, but due to pushing the limit too far, the piece has a lot of depressions in it.

But honestly, I don't care about the depressions, because as bad as it looks from some angles, there is *zero* hair or foreign particles in it.  That has been a huge problem for us, and it now appears to be solved.  Doing a re-pour with a better amount of resin will really make this one shine.
