Historical French Cutting Machine Video
« on: January 06, 2019, 11:25:33 PM »

Hello, I am currently making a video series where I look at different faceting machines from various cultures around the world.  The newest one is about the ancient gem cutting machines from France.  I got to sit with a 5th generation gem cutter and document his technique.  Its a short video and I hope entertaining:

Very enjoyable. I'm surprised that faceting was not done with  a kick wheel with a very heavy fly wheel. I use a kick wheel in good weather to throw ceramics and they have a lot of kinetic energy and are very smooth when used properly.

That was very interesting.  I agree about the flywheel concept to gather momentum, and the kickstand.  The hand rotation while trying to concentrate on faceting a stone shows what determination is all about.

Interesting and nostalgic; true craftsmanship!  I was amazed that they did not have a shorted hand crank which took up half the table with its sweep radius.
