Another mystery for you guys
« on: May 18, 2017, 03:13:23 PM »

Hello All,
I found this at Jalama Beach in California. I grabbed it, because for one it was really unique from the rest, but 2 it kind of looked like a brain which was intriguing. I haven't cut it on the off chance that it actually is some sort of fossilized brain or something haha. I'm just wondering if this is just some interesting type of normal rock, is this a fossil of sorts, or is this something worth cutting and cabbing.
thanks,
Michael

A couple of indentations seem to have orbs with rays that look like fossil coral. Rest of it looks a bit disordered for fossil coral, though. Looks like an interesting piece that may require slicing a couple of windows to better see what is inside.

I don't know why, but another picture I thought I posted didn't attach so here it is.
Fossilized coral is an interesting thought. Would there be something inside if it was?

A type of Brecciated Jasper.  California is loaded with them due to the seismic activity.
Window the piece and it will probably be amazing inside.

Hmm. I don't know a lot as I'm fairly new to the hobby, but I don't think it's brecciated although the thought did occur to me. I can't tell you why, but something about the texture, color, and shapes of everything didn't seem like that's what it is. It really looks like a rock brain. I know it's not, but that's how the structure looks. I feel like in my short experience brecciated jasper had at least some jagged and sharp edges from fracturing. These are all very soft. I don't know. I will probably cut it on Saturday if nobody advises against it, because it turns out to be some ancient ancestor fossilized brain or something lol.

I don't think you need to worry about it being a fossilized brain.   :toothy12:

Absolutely slice it and then post a picture so we can see what it looks like inside.

I have two thoughts seeing that sliced open..
1) Original through of a brecciated jaspagate.
2) Coprolite.  At Quartzite I saw some coprolite slabs that looked very similar to this stuff.
