I have been watching reports about this place for many years and the locals seem to do best. A few years ago it was very close to being privatized. I was collecting north of Helena Montana about twenty years ago and two quite large and valuable diamonds were found that year locally. A number of diamonds have been found over the years in Washington as well. Very few people look for them .

I hope to be able to stop by there this June during our move from California to TN The problem I will not be traveling alone and more than likely will be out voted but I will be pushing for it.

Oh boy

I was there just this weekend. It's fun, but don't expect to come away rich. There are a lot of good-sized orange, red, and yellow jasper taters to be had, and I picked up several agate pieces that are about 1.5" thick and have a sort of wavy bacon pattern (sorry, I am really new to rockhounding so I don't know the terms yet). I found a couple small pieces of quartz crystal with amethyst in it, but nothing big enough to cut. Found a couple very small diamonds <1 pt each, so nothing of value. Also found a hell of a backache from digging dirt and washing gravel.

It's good dirty fun if you don't have high expectations for any great scores.

Hi Talia,

Im in the same boat with you.
I know nothing about gems. I do know some
things about jasper i think.  :LOLOL:

If it looks odd or different i keep it.

Sounds like you had a good time there.  :occasion14:

Oh, I know gems, once they're cut. But raw minerals and rocks? Nope. Starting to learn though, because I want to cut my own for my jewelry since I can never find what I want. :)
