Fossil Sponge pics from Wyoming trip. Great material
« on: October 09, 2017, 09:20:04 PM »

Here are some of the first slabs from the Fossil Sponges I collected in Wyoming.  The huge sponge in my hand hasn't been cut yet since my 18" needed mucking.  You can see all the openings from the original sponge on top.  Hard to see from the side pic but it has very good color banding with the jagged sponge lines that will give the patterns like the other pics.  The close up pic on the one sponge I wanted to show the almost Sagenitic like lines of the sponge.  We didn't spend long there and it was the first time in the area.  We plan on going back again now that we know what we are looking for.  I cut a couple of the slabs from the piece in the first 3 pics thin for some knife scales.

I rock hunt in the Antelope/Ashwood area of the John Day river basin in Oregon. 90% of what I post is from this area, from private property where I have permission to hike and collect. The material I find is for personal use only, I do not have landowner permission to sell. Thanks for understanding!

Thanks for posting these pics. I wouldn't have known that was a sponge, and still couldn't ID the rough. What do they look like if sawed across the "grain"? Would enjoy seeing more photos of yours - no matter what the orientation.

You did kill it there. Great stuff! Wouldn't have guessed the inside from the outside...
