"The Birth of the Opal"

Postby gingerkid » Fri Jan 21, 2011 2:24 am
found this online this morning while searching for books on opals.

by Ella Wheeler Wilcox
Publisher: JAQUES & MARCUS, JEWELERS, NY, copyright 1886

"The Birth of the Opal"

The Sunbeam loved the Moonbeam,
And followed her low and high ;

But the Moonbeam fled and hid her head,
She was so shy — so shy.

The Sunbeam wooed with passion, —

Oh, he was a lover bold.
And his heart was afire with mad desire.

For the Moonbeam pale and cold.

She fled like a dream before him.
Her hair was a shining sheen, —

And oh, that Fate would annihilate
The space that lay between !

Just as the Day lay panting

In the arms of the twilight dim,

The Sunbeam caught the one he sought,
And drew her close to him.

But out of his warm arms, startled
And stirred with Love's first shock,

She sprang afraid, like a trembling maid.
And hid in the niche of a rock.

And the Sunbeam followed and found her.
And led her to Love's own feast ;

And they were wed on that rocky bed,
And the dying Day was their priest.

And lo ! the beautiful Opal,
That rare and wondrous gem.

Where the moon and sun blend into one.
Was the child that was born to them.

My Favourite..

Amy Lowell
Opal

You are ice and fire,
The touch of you burns my hands like snow.
You are cold and flame.
You are the crimson of amaryllis,
The silver of moon-touched magnolias.
When I am with you,
My heart is a frozen pond
Gleaming with agitated torches

Just actually took the time to read the poem about the birth of opal. wow does that sing

I tried to read it various ways but finally had to read it like Robert Service's The Ballad of Sam McGee. the cadence is exactly the same as you can see.

The Ballad of Sam McGee

Robert Service

There are strange things done in the midnight sun
By the men who moil for gold;
The Arctic trails have their secret tales
That would make your blood run cold;
The Northern Lights have seen queer sights,
But the queerest they ever did see
Was that night on the marge of Lac LeBarge
I cremated Sam McGee.

Thats how it opens and closes and it doesn't go on forever but it does run for a fair piece.
