Need Beacon Star 6" Maintenance Help
« on: October 16, 2017, 09:47:27 AM »

Hi, all.  :hello: I was on the old site and am just making it over here. I have been cutting stones for 2 years and my old Beacon Star (2 6" wheels) gave up last night while I was working. I bought it used, no manual or serial number, and am having some trouble figuring out how to get it all apart so I can replace parts and get it going again   :sad4: . My wheels just stopped turning and I thought it was my belt being worn out so I moved my motor back, but the shaft just won't turn.  After talking to a few friends, I thinking my bearings have gone, but I am clueless honestly. Any help would be VERY appreciated. I'm panicking a bit as this little baby is responsible for all of my income. Thank you so much!

A photo would help.  Beacon Star made a lot of models.  First I would dismount the belt and see if the shaft will turn.  Most lapidary grinders have very little holding the shaft together.  At most the bearings may have twist locks or set screws.  What you can count on is corrosion binding everything together.  I like Kroil or a mixture of acetone and ATF to break things loose.  A press is best but you can knock things apart with a soft hammer or a hammer cushioned with wood.  The bearings will have numbers on them but you can also get replacements by measuring all critical dimensions and talking to a bearing specialist.

I have a 4 wheel beacon star. If it is like mine I would check the set screw in the Pully. If the motor is running and the belt is spinning check the pully on the machines shaft. It could be the pully on the motor. A picture would help
