Black Rock Desert Geode Cab
« on: June 04, 2018, 05:11:28 PM »

This cab is my latest submission to Rock and Gem magazine for my "Bench Tips" monthly column. It is made from a slab of a Black Rock Desert Geode. The slab had a vug that I utilized for the center of the cab. It looked lonely so I added a small hemisphere of red jasper in the center. I recessed it into a slab of Basanite that I backed the cab with. The cab is 2-1/4" tall.

Nice photo too... is the cabochon sitting on glass that is suspended above cloth?  There is a neat smiley face on the little bead as well.

I have a little plastic gizmo that I use to hold the cabs above the surface of the background photo gradient. I will show how it is made later today. It is made from plastic pieces that I get from Tap Plastics. I cut a small cross  in the photo gradient and poke the plastic gizmo up through it. The cab covers the top of the plastic gizmo and the cut in the photo gradient so you don't see them. I hold the cab on the plastic gizmo with double sided clear Scotch tape. It makes the cab look like it is floating above the surface.

I found the photo of the plastic gizmo.

The piece is made from a 1/2" round disk, a 2" round disk and a piece of 1/8" rod. After I cement them together I heat the rod near the top disk and bend it do that the top is at about a 45 degree angle so the cab will be facing the camera. I cut a 1/2" cross in the photo gradient and poke the gizmo up through it. I put a piece of Scotch tape on the small disk to hold the cab. When I'm taking the photo I hold the camera at about 10" away from the cab and let the camera do the focusing, time and aperture setting automatically. I shoot with the maximum resolution on the camera and crop the photo with Windows Live Photo Gallery to bring the cab image up closer. This way I dint need a macro lens to get real close up photos. I use a canon Rebel XT camera. I have a few photo gradients on my computer that I print out but mostly I use the one shown because I like the background image and colors.
It only takes a few seconds to turn on the lights, place the cab on the fixture and shoot the shot.
