using the side of a Grinding Wheel

I use a grinder that has 8 x 1-1/2inch wheels 100 grit and 220 I was wondering am a ruining the wheel but using the side of the wheels for a quick grind to flatten the stone? the sides of both stones seem to be much smoother than the grinding face why is that?

The next thing on my wish-list is a flat lap. I have some skills and parts to make one but I have not found a great design to make one yet, any resources that you know of out there.

Eric, are you using silicon carbide wheels or plated diamond wheels?  It sounds to me like you're describing SC wheels.

It sounds like you are talking about vitrified wheels.  If so you need to be aware that the binder is glass.  These wheels are not intended to be used from the side.  Too much stress will shatter the wheel.  Do a google on grinding wheel accidents to see what can happen.

Thanks for the heads up Yes I am using SC wheels I will just not do that anymore I kinda knew it was a bad idea.

 Any Ideas for flat lap plans or links to some?
