Need a name for this rock.
« on: September 12, 2018, 09:27:23 AM »

Greetings all. I acquired the subject rock (see photo) from a pile already in cube form so it was a natural for preparing a sphere; problem is the original owner (and myself included) haven't a clue as to name/provenance.  Any help out there from our more seasoned rock vets?

Thanks in advance.  In terms of hardness, it grinds like a rhyolite, so maybe 7ish on the Mohs scale.

David.

Do you have a photo of the other side?

I agree that it looks like a rhyolite, but jasper is also still possible. In Oregon, I've seen pieces from the Mitchell and Owyhee basin areas that might be possibilities, but not sure based on that photo. Any red?

It strikes me more as a Shecky.

You guys -- so funny!

Seriously, from the shine it looks like it has on that one flat face, I would lean more toward a jasper.  No clue what it is, but it's really interesting.

Well, I did ask for a name, so thanks for the suggestions, definitely some creative responses compared to the more pedestrian "Rocky" or "Stone" names (i.e. never knew a Shecky).

No red to speak of on the sphere to answer a previous question posed.  When I finish it up with a nice polish, I will post in the sphere section...I might even name it (him) Jasper.

Cheers.

Bam.  Now that is a rather specific answer!  Thanks Barklay, that does make sense as well as the seller routinely goes to the Quartzite area to sell/barter..
