New photo setup on some cabs
« on: October 20, 2020, 09:52:03 AM »

I had a group of cabs waiting for photos and I don't think I had shot these before.  I set up my usual cardboard box with pin standoffs but instead of my old point and shoot coolpix which does great macros I used a Nikon D90 with a 50mm macro lens and a 20 extension tube.  This allow me to get much higher depth of field on the photos and at higher resolution.  If I used any longer of an extension tube I wouldn't be able to shoot the full cabs on the larger ones but I might do a macro series just for the fun of it highlighting small details in the stones.

Beautiful shots of some amazing material!  I hadn't seen the plume in a malachite before, that was a surprise.  The Utah plumes are also quite nice, I thought the first one may have been a Regency Rose from Graveyard Point.  The tear drop shape for the Mexican sagenite was the perfect call.  Again, some great pics of great material and workmanship.

Thanks for sharing.

Yeah looks very much the same, If I had found the slab in a sales bin I might have gone that route, but fortunately I was the one who dug it out of the ground on a very productive day in Utah.

Excellent work on those pears and especially that marquise, I rarely see them so sharp and even. How big are they?

Thanks, I like very sharp edged bevels and at times the shapes themselves however the sharp points make it hard for making the bezels in settings

Marquis is 13x66mm  8mm high

Pears are 23x46mm and 22x37mm

Great shots of great cabs.

Usually use a Coolpix P90 here, but Robin has a Canon Rebel with lenses. I might have to try it someday.

I use my Coolpix P900 normally for the macro shots, stone shots and as my Hounding camera to catch wildlife on trips it is a very versatile camera as are pretty much all the P series Coolpix cameras.  Coolpix cameras' ability to focus down to under half an inch from the lens really makes a huge difference but at times that close in challenging lighting conditions you almost need a ring light.   I have shot with my DSLR in the past using my 50mm 1:1 lens but adding the extension tube to get closer was the key for smaller stones.

Sort of reminds you of Regency Rose doesn't it?
