Red and Black Botryoidal?
« on: February 10, 2025, 07:21:34 AM »

Acquired from a collection hosting domestic varieties, pucked prior to 1990. It was put out the same time as a large clutch of Ellensburg nodules and has the same style cortex. I haven't been able to ID it from any examples of Eburg or Red Top. Any guesses would be welcome- I'd rather not slice into it unless I know I can find another.

See if it reacts to blank light,  UV.

If I had one, trust, I'd be flashing all my mysteries. Talked to a guy at the Boise rock shop and he suggested a UVBeast. I picked up some blobby job in Ogden at a Walmart parking lot that looks a helluva lot like Youngite. Blacklight is on the list, for sure!

Here it is side-by-side with the two blues. Behind is a Uvalde Gravel 'blue' for color ref.

To me it definitely looks like some of the brown to black fire agate with the clear chalcedony the bots.  Normally would show a green under UV.

I will dutifully report back re. luminescence and when it hits the saw you guys will definitely see it. Getting braver about cutting quality with the increase in blade prices!!
