A friend brought this over the other day and I am clueless. Has a very unique inner and outer "crust". Scratches fairly readily with my scratch awl.

Travertine? Looks like it was deposited by a hot spring.

Yes  with possibly a manganese oxide coating.

If travertine it might fluoresce under long or short UV. Better under short though.
