Hi from North Carolina!
« on: October 13, 2019, 02:53:33 PM »

Hi everyone,

I’m brand new to the lapidary scene and am trying to learn how to facet gemstones. Built my own machine to learn the fundamentals of faceting and because it was all I could afford at the moment. If you have some advice to throw my way please send it. I’m hoping to have a rough idea of what I’m doing by next year.

Thanks in advance,

Allan

Welcome from Northern Arizona!

Amateur Gemstone Faceting - Volume 1 by Tom Herbst is awesome.  I recommend you get it.  Here's the Amazon link:

https://www.amazon.com/Amateur-Gemstone-Faceting-1-Essentials/dp/3000474749/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=faceting&qid=1571004058&sr=8-1

William Holland is in NC and has faceting classes.  Don't know where you are in NC, but it may be an option for you:  https://lapidaryschool.org/Category.aspx?Worder=24

Good luck!

Thanks for the welcome! I’ve picked up the two first volumes by Tom Hurbst. Definitely good reads!

Welcome . Stay away from trying big quartz gems until you are good at faceting as they can be a real pain.Small is generally better in any case when you are new to faceting as it is much easier and faster to cut in the facets and polish them.
