Mobius flower star
« on: June 17, 2017, 01:37:50 PM »

I started this little carving back in 2015, finally decided to give it a polish, its pyroxmangite a polymorph of rhodonite, very much like working jadeite.

Reminds me of candy from my childhood - that color of a berry creamsickle.  Gorgeous!

Thanks for the great comments, part of the joy I get from carving is sharing my work.

What a great piece!  The stone is excellent, the finish is stellar, and the shape is fantasctic.  The curved 5-point star on the outside, the nice pentagonal hole through the center, the mobius shape to give it that extra ka-pow.  Love this one!

I have seen this in real life, it is awesome work as always from Michael. I recently spent a weekend with Michael and he willingly shared his knowledge to help with a carving I have in progress, thanks Michael.

Beautiful! What types of tools does one use to begin carving stones, if you don't mind me asking?

I get as much pleasure reading the comments as I do carving a piece like this, next time I carve this will be in some quality nephrite jade, recently received some very bright Ukon Canadian jade, may also be a great candidate for my little fish shape, Like most carvers I use a flex shaft hand piece, also a small air rotary tool for the finer work, I hand sand and polish most carvings. Sometimes I polish with oxides, Linde A on jade with leather in a small bench laythe or my flex shaft handpiece, recently tried high grade cerium oxide on opal with some hard felt points, great results, better than diamond.
