The top-right sphere in the first photo and the one on the right in the second photo look a little like velvet obsidian. Is that just my imagination working overtime again?

Great work on those obsidian spheres!  The polish step can get tricky depending on the specific material.  These really pop!

Vitzitziltecpatl,  You are correct.  I ask the person who I got the material from and some of it is Velvet.  He said that it all comes from Jalisco, Mexico.  I also read an article on the internet and the obsidian veins go for miles down there.  Many different types come out of the area.  Maybe some day I will find someone else who has some that is even more different.

Wow. The velvet (or peacock) obsidian is beautiful material. Usually more spendy than most other types, too.

Stacked layers of different colors. Really interesting to cut cabs from if you experiment with different angles.

Good for you for finding such a good source for it.
