Attempts at Opal Doublets 1
« on: December 10, 2017, 06:13:42 AM »

Hi,
About a couple of weeks ago I tried my hand at creating a few opal doublets. The website was down at the time, got 10 mins to spare so thought I'd share here as well!

Never done it before, using Black Agate as a back.  Tried it first with a blue bit of crystal / jelly stuff. The digital camera freaks out a bit with Blues but see what you think...?  I've already had a few comments about them being too thick so I can grind the back down a little.

Nice stone.  Yes, it's too thick.  Actually, it looks like that opal was thick enough to cut a solid, so if it were me, I'd grind down that black to just enough to cover the back of the stone.

Thanks for the good feedback Robin.

Yep..thought as much with the thickness but it was good to go through the process. Also it gave it a darker back to bring the colours out a bit. I’ll take it back so it’s just a th8n backing...
