This may seem obvious to most here but what the heck I blew 5 bucks to make sure.

Gasp! Not real? Not even from China?

Sad thing, is that there are some excellent gem cutters doing work in top quality stones in China - and their reputations get tarred by the overwhelming number of fakers. Nice video, and thanks for publicizing this. Maybe one day the Chinese gov't will get a clue to the harm being done to their legitimate business people.

I'm moving this to the fake stones area of the forum.
I don't trust a darn thing stone wise coming from China to be what they say it is.

Sorry I didn't realize there was a fake gems section.

No worries.  This is a big forum to Navigate!
When Phish and I were designing this baby we tried to make sure that all segments and facets of anything even remotely lapidary related were covered.   :icon_sunny:

most products labelled from china are advertised as a PLAY ON WORDS and the products are sold as legit based on the interpretation of those words. for example i bought a green stone from a reputable dealer who said the product was jade. i flat out told her it was not. the bead bracelet i bought was too light in weight to be jade. after we discussed/argued politely she explained that ANY STONE THat IS GREEN - IS CALLED JADE, jade meaning green. she said if its green it's jade!! jade does come in a variety of colors. if it will sell better, OTHER TYPES OF STONES bearing those colors they also call it jade, .  no wonder people get confused.

 :) :) That sounds about right! :) :)
AND they do it with a straight face to their own people too.
A type of jade called Hetian is sold within China at a rate of about ten tons a year, yet only around 50 to 80kg are found every year. At least that is still nephrite.
"Tianhuang" is known to have been all but exhausted in China, and comes largely from Indonesia. Yet is legitimately sold in China, as Chinese Jade to their own people (westerners don't know about it anyhow), AND is soapstone.

I get very suspicious of good jade from China.  I knew a buyer that went to China a few times a year for decades.  He knew the sources.  He was always saying the best materials never left the country.  He had some great carvings in jade too.
