Another one from scratch
« on: December 25, 2016, 12:46:38 PM »

I just finished another knife from a high speed steel cold saw blade.  This one has a very practical shape and is handled with Woodward agate.  It still isn't perfect but I'm getting better.  The hollow pins presented a major challenge.  Lining up perfectly matching holes that had to be drilled with different types of drill bits through the three pieces took a while.  Especially so since the knife steel is harder than standard HSS drill bits.

Very nice!  I'm having a hard time seeing any imperfections -- looks beautiful to me!

Very nice.  I am impressed with you doing the pins. I have thought about it but it always looked like too much work. I would of done it the same way I do it wood scales. Drill
The steel first, glue on one side than drill through the holes in the blade than glue the other side on and use the holes in the first scale to Drill Through the second scale. Is that what you did?

Yes, I drilled the holes in the tang .003" oversize and modified my drill through technique slightly by adding epoxy to the back side to avoid breakout since I couldn't be sure of good contact with the backer board.

I have also avoided making pins in the handles for the same reasons.  Can't argue with the results on your knife though, beautiful!

That is a really amazing knife!
I'm curious which came first, the blade making or the lapidary skills?

Do you sell them?

I've been doing lapidary for 20 years.  This is my third knife.  All have come from the same cold saw blade.  I don't think the quality is good enough to put my name on and sell.

Hi, you can anneal the tang to make drilling easier. I usually drill the scales first, taped together, before shaping. Then use one as a template to mark the blade.  Vic

Yes it can be annealed but all I have to heat with would be a propane torch and heat treating M2 is a very precise and very high temperature process.  Differential tempering invites warp and high stress.  If I decide to stick with this direction I'll buy bar stock and have someone else do the heat treating.
