Outrageous Cab Contest July 2017
« on: July 03, 2017, 08:25:05 PM »

Rules:
1) Cab must be made by you.
2) Cab must be made within the time period of this contest.  Contest begins on the first of the month and ends on 11:59 p.m. on the last day of the month.  NO pulling old cabs from your storage baskets!
3) As long as the basic shape is considered a cab it's golden.  You can enter intarsias and carved top cabs such as cameos etc.  After all, this is the OUTRAGEOUS cab contest!  We love free form cabs!  Pull out the stops and give us the best you have!
4) One entry per person please!
5) Please show photos of your slabs and preforms if you can so we can see your thought process and how you did things.
6) No finished jewelry pieces.  Just the cab.
7) Cab sets are OK.
8) This is only for bragging rights and your cabochon photo posted up top in the forums unless someone posts a lapidary related prize and wants to ship it to the winner of the contest.

Let the games begin!!!   :toothy10:

Great, you have found a contest for that wonderful creation.
Sorry that you cant use it at the other challenge, would have loved it as entry there too.

What other challenge? Where is it?

The original forum here has spawned all sorts of contests on he internet.
I took the idea from here on to FB, and expanded the parameters over time.
At first, we tested viability on an established page, then we created a page dedicated to a separate page.
We are trying to bring lapidarists from all stiles and materials together on a monthly theme for a personal challenge.
We have regular contributors on the carving side, but unfortunately struggle with cabers to take up the challenge to stand up against them. So this time round, the theme is on "moss, dendrites, and/or plumes" to give the cabers a bit more initiative. Sadly, as the composite above does not have any of those elements, I had to decide against taking it into the challenge this time round.

My entry if its in the guidelines for this, its Lightning Ridge opal, its my entry in the opal awards this weekend at Lightning Ridge, dought it placed as I do not think there is enough free form element but the opal was a flat sanded opal seam slab.

Thanks Kurt, my wife Margie thinks its my best carving to date but my son Adam does not like this, he likes my jade dagger and the mobius arrow heads, I like the cloud cyclone- typhoon shape I revealed on the back, I have had bad days recently with my health, rheumatoid arthritis in my right knee and right hand.

It definitely fits the guidelines and it's beautiful!  I think it has plenty of freeform elements in it.  Good luck at Lightning Ridge!

Had nothing for this month really, but then I just had to try out some new material that was send to me from R2D at the opalforum. Hard as hell to my blade (think Ironstone) when cutting through layers, but nice texture and finish.

Wascoite - which is a layered mix of agate, opal and jasper. That is one of the pieces from the original early 1965 dig (dug out over 2 days, as it was uncovered during a road construction project and the remaining outcrop is now under Hwy 97) near the hamlet of Wasco, Sherman County, Oregon. There was a second deposit near Rufus, Oregon found later, but less opal in the newer material.
